(This was previously submitted as https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2246856) The Ravenna Ultra-Low-Altitude Vehicle is a backyard rocketship treehouse nestled in the Seattle neighborhood of Ravenna. Click the link to see a demo video (http://rocket.jonh.net). The hexagonal treehouse is about 6.5 feet (2 meters) across at its widest point. The frame is welded mild steel with riveted aluminum siding. It contains nearly 800 LEDs forming dozens of numeric displays spread across 14 control panels, each with an acrylic face laser-cut and etched with labels such as…

Hi all, We're Fabienne and Ewan of Climacrux. Today we're proud to launch our latest project to try and make carbon dioxide removal as accessible as possible: CDR Platform [1]. In short: it’s an API to connect to a portfolio of carbon removers. You can purchase from as low as a single gram and select from both natural and technological removal methods. Longer: A couple of years ago we launched an alternative to carbon credits, Carbon Removed[2], designed for individuals to buy and subscribe to CDR. But we always had the nagging thought that there was more that could be done. CDR Platform is…

Hi HN, This is my attempt to fix groggy mornings by lowering my bedroom CO2 from 1700 ppm to ~900 ppm. I designed a simple, 3D-printed fan duct that directs air under the door to improve air circulation. A note on the design process: I used CadQuery, a Python library for creating parametric 3D models. I didn't know tools like this existed and highly recommend it if you can program; it turned out to be more convenient than manually iterating on prototypes in a GUI. The project is open source and the post explains the full build. Happy to answer any questions.

Hello HN! I'm an engineer at Splitgraph and recently started learning Rust so I could make my first contribution to Seafowl [0], an early stage analytical database. Along the way I figured out a database hosting hack on GCP and wanted to share it with HN. It's a way to achieve "true" scale to zero database hosting that could be useful for certain side projects or spiky traffic situations. A recurring problem I've faced with side projects is the need for Postgres, but no desire to deploy or maintain new instances. So when I learned GCP's "always free" tier includes serverless [1] I got…

Hey HN, Zach here, cofounder of Coherence (withcoherence.com). After over two years supporting customers deploying apps to AWS and GCP we’ve come to the conclusion that developers really want to own the customization and configurability that the public cloud provides without having to write and maintain all the glue code that goes with it. That’s why we’re launching CNC (https://github.com/coherenceplatform/cnc), an open-source framework that equips developers with the right tools to deploy applications with precision. Rooted in the principles of Infrastructure as Code…
