24 alternatives to Candidly, a (hopefully) better way to learn about politicians
Hey HN! I've been wondering for a while how we might be able to make the process of evaluating the politicians we vote for more transparent. In the most recent SF election- for example- I only really had a few promotional websites and some loose policy statements to go off of. This seems quite inefficient, especially considering how much signal- social media posts, policy decisions, interviews- exists on the internet for each politician. So, I put together Candidly (https://votecandidly.com/) as an experiment (for now, it only has information on the candidates for SF's…

VoteVid▲106Hey, I am Victor, a french student. I was tired of getting really bad recommandations from the algorithm, always the same videos, same topics. So I created a community-driven recommandation tool, with upvotes like Product Hunt or Hacker News. Looking for something to watch or want to share something you liked? Feel free to check the site, it's free, no account needed (unless you want to share or upvote a video).

A group of us (democracy-passionate friends) just launched OpenBallot, a platform of 40+ voter guides. The goal is to save you research time by showing you all the endorsements and explanations you care about in one place. You can use this to fill out your ballot, which is private by default. You can then share with friends or publish your views on our platform. The site is our first prototype; if you're in SF, please try it and share your feedback! We're hoping to use this to eventually scale to all over the country.

Over the weekend we built Parliament Wow. It's hacky, buggy and slightly broken but it does the job :) Parliament Wow makes it easy to find out what is going on in parliament and what it actually means for you and me. We know that nobody has the time to watch hours of debates, drown in legal paperwork or keep up with the implications of every vote. Not me or you and least of all your MPs. There is just too much data. So we made a solution. We paired some semantic search with every publicly accessible document, audio recording or transcript we could get our hands on + some generative models…
