24 alternatives to Coasts – Containerized Hosts for Agents

Hi HN - We've been working on Coasts (“containerized hosts”) to make it so you can run multiple localhost instances, and multiple docker-compose runtimes, across git worktrees on the same computer. Here’s a demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRiySdGQZZA. There are also videos in our docs that give a good conceptual overview: https://coasts.dev/docs/learn-coasts-videos. Agents can make code changes in different worktrees in isolation, but it's hard for them to test their changes without multiple localhost runtimes that are isolated and scoped to those…

Coasts enables developers to run multiple isolated localhost instances and docker-compose runtimes simultaneously across different git worktrees on a single computer. It solves the testing challenge for agents and… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. Hi HN, I’m one of the creators of ByteNite (https://bytenite.com). We built it for developers running compute-heavy containerized workloads (AI, ETL, batch jobs) who are frustrated with the limitations of traditional serverless platforms: timeouts, cold starts, orchestration complexity, and limited runtime control. ByteNite is a serverless platform that lets you submit distributed jobs packaged as Docker containers. You define simple or complex fan-out/fan-in logic, set your hardware requirements, and we handle the rest—distributing execution across warm cloud runners (CPUs,…

I've been frustrated with dependency hell and clutter on my VPS from dev, so I built Devbox: a lightweight, open-source CLI tool that spins up isolated development environments using Docker. Each project runs in its own container, but your code stays in simple flat folders on the host machine—no messing with volumes or sync issues. Environments are disposable, so you can nuke and recreate them without losing your work. Key features: - Instant setup: `devbox init my-project` and you're in a fresh env with `devbox shell`. - Configurable via JSON: Define packages, services, and more in a…

Hi HN! I've recently been finding productivity in running parallel CLI coding agents(after not believing in them initially). After having to do a ton of git stashing and branch fumbling, I decided I needed to something to more ergonomically run these agents in their own dedicated spaces. I tried a lot of the existing products but they either were too convoluted or flat out didn't work. Some of them also seem to roll their own chat UI which I don't think is the right approach, I wanted to something to lightly wrap my terminal sessions. So I built FleetCode! It uses git worktrees and let's you…

Hi, founder of Okteto here! We’ve been experimenting with AI agents in our workflows at Okteto. Running them locally worked at first, but quickly became painful. git worktrees, multiple terminals, and messy context switches slowed us down. So we built Agent Fleets: ephemeral, fully managed environments for AI agents, built on top of Okteto’s development platform. Each agent runs in its own containerized environment on your infrastructure, with the services, tools, and policies it needs. You can spin up agents with a single click or API call. No local setup. No git worktrees. The beta…

Example: dockerized npm init dockerized python2 somescript.py Run an older version of a tool: NODE_VERSION=15.0 dockerized node Use cases: - Maintaining multiple versions of an app - Installing without polluting host machine - Quickly run some commands you may not have installed Features: - intuitive use. Just the original command, but with 'dockerized' in front. - dockerized apps can access the current directory and read/modify files, just like native apps. - no need to know which docker image this…

I've been looking for a way to run LLMs safely without needing to approve every command. There are plenty of projects out there that run the agent in docker, but they don't always contain the dependencies that I need. Then it struck me. I already define project dependencies with mise. What if we could build a container on the fly for any project by reading the mise config? I've been using agent-en-place for a couple of weeks now, and it's working great! I'd love to hear what y'all think

Hi HN, this is Cesar and Rodny, developers of an open-source container runtime called Sysbox, and co-founders of a startup called Nestybox (YC S20). We launched on HN almost a year ago and got excellent feedback then (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24084758). Happy to say that over the past year, Sysbox has continued to gain traction, particularly for securing containers in production, CI/CD, and containerized dev environments. We wanted to announce an important new feature: integration between Sysbox and Kubernetes. As a quick refresher, Sysbox is a "runc" that…

I’ve been tinkering with what a “multi-agent IDE” should look like if your day-to-day workflow is mostly in terminal (Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, etc.). The more I played with it, the more it collapsed into three fundamentals: * A good TUI: Terminal is the center stage, with other stuff (CodeEdit, Diff, Review) baked on the side. I don’t like piping Agent’s output through some electron wrapper, here you get to run CC/Codex/Droid/Amp/etc directly. * Isolation: agents shouldn’t step on each other’s toes. The simplest primitive I’ve found is Git worktrees. It is not as…

I make this tool, a self-hosted dashboard, to show which host ports are taken, as a traffic-light grid. All the reason because I'm a home server enthusiast, but have a chaotic and terrible memory. It can aggregate ports from your different hosts and VPS as long as the network is reachable. And it merges three local sources into one grid: host listen tables, Docker API, and Compose files. As a beginner, I am open to everyone's comments, and if there are better similar tools, please tell me about them to help me refer to them for learning, thanks.

I've been playing with cross platform windows/linux Kubernetes clusters recently and have had endless problems with installer scripts misconfiguring networking by using the wrong NIC etc. I got frustrated with the tooling on windows to debug container networking so I built a tool that attempts to stitch together the HNS (Host Network Service) & HCS (Host Compute Service) resources into a tree that shows the relationship between configs. You can also search over it to find the networking impacting your containers or launch the windows built in packet capture tool to create a network…
