Over the weekend I was discussing the latest news relating to open weights with some of my non-techie friends. After 30 mins of waffling, I realised it is quite a long and interesting story, with many twists and turns. Trifle is an open-source time-series analytics library that aggregates nested counters instead of storing raw events. All in the database you already have. After rebuilding it twice over 10 years, it now tracks ~1B events a day at my day job. It started in 2015 as my own Rails APM.
