i needed a vocab app that worked offline with spaced repetition built in. the options out there either required an internet connection, didn't have spaced reptition, or has ads. deft ships the entire English Wiktionary (~1.1M words) on-device. the raw Wiktionary dump is ~18GB of JSONL — i stripped it down to just the basics (glosses, parts of speech, related words) and compressed it into a ~220MB SQLite database for definitions and a ~34MB Tantivy search index. next release should bring the total size down to ~100MB, just finalizing that. search runs three tiers via Rust: full-text search…

Hi! Wanted to share the project I really wanted to have. TLDR; this app lets you create your own list of words and you get a Duolingo-like experience (kind of, still needs a lot of features) practicing those words in their context. My English is not the best but not the worst either. But I realized I can't boost it up after a certain level! In my belief, in order to truly learn a language, you need to be exposed to that language often. Vocabulary is the key factor here if you really want to improve in any language. My experience is that when I read a book to improve my English vocabulary, I…

Dictlyfree tier, from $29.99/mo▲240TL;DR: I built a native macOS dictation app that transcribes locally and instantly. Text appears as you speak (measured ~100 ms first‑character latency). Wordy▲231Hey HN, I'm Sándor. I built Wordy because I kept pausing Netflix to look up words in a dictionary. So I made a subtitle tool for myself, and it kind of snowballed from there. What it does: You watch short clips from real movies and TV shows, then get quizzed on the vocabulary you just heard. The app tracks every word automatically and adapts to your level. 20+ languages. How it evolved: Started as an iOS app for interactive streaming subtitles. Then I added curated video clips with quizzes. Then vocabulary tracking, spaced repetition, and personalized learning paths. Now it's iOS + Android +…

Hi HN — I built Vocab Top because I kept looking up the same words over and over and never retaining them. Dictionary definitions weren't sticking. The idea: use generative AI to surround every word with multiple memory anchors — a custom image, a mnemonic trick, example sentences, native audio, and grammatical forms — so your brain has more to hold onto. Tech stack: Next.js 16, React 19, Tailwind CSS. The AI generation uses Google Gemini and FriendliAI. Audio is Google Cloud TTS. Words are saved to local storage — no account required. The newest feature is Word Forms: when you search any…

English is my second language. From my experience, I learnt that developing your vocabulary is a long and arduous process. Traditionally, learners used flashcards (or their digital incarnations). I wanted to build something more engaging and more effective in building your vocabulary. DictionaryGames is aimed mostly at ESL (English as a Second Language) students, but I am hoping it might be fun for any English language lovers. The project is in BETA, it is free, and no registration is required. I am looking for feedback to improve it. If you comment, please indicate if you are a native…

I'm building a Telegram bot to practice Dutch. GPT-4o-mini kept picking vocabulary words I already knew, so I built a classical NLP pipeline to do it instead. It takes a short text + learner level (A0–B1) and returns the best words to study, using Stanza for parsing and corpus frequency ranks (SUBTLEX-NL, srLex, SUBTLEX-US) for scoring. Wins at A1/A2, loses at A0 where the LLM picks more obvious words. I also tried adding multi-word phrases (ADJ+NOUN, VERB+NOUN, phrasal verbs) backed by NPMI-scored collocation whitelists. Couldn't beat GPT there because it just "knows" which phrases…
