DivANS is a compression algorithm written in Rust that uses SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) optimization and runs directly in web browsers through WebAssembly. I wrote libcorrect in C in 2016 and wanted to revisit it in Rust. Instead of doing just a direct conversion, I went down the rabbit hole of making Rust's std::simd work for me. I ended up with a templated, generic Viterbi decoder for convolutional codes that dispatches the decode at runtime depending on which instruction sets are available. For small rates and orders, the entire decode lives in registers. Larger codes work through memory but take advantage of some acceleration structures. I also spent some time building a tool to find optimal (max d_free) conv codes for a given rate and…

I was building a Rust-based agentic coding TUI and needed to render Mermaid diagrams. Noticed the official mermaid-cli spawns a full browser instance (Puppeteer/Chrome) just to render diagrams. Decided to fix this. mmdr is a native Rust renderer. No browser, no Node.js. mermaid-cli: ~3000ms per diagram mmdr: ~3ms per diagram Supports 13 diagram types: flowchart, sequence, class, state, ER, pie, gantt, timeline, journey, mindmap, git graph, XY chart, and quadrant.

Serialization framework with some interesting numbers: 10-20x faster on nested objects than json/protobuf. Technical approach: compile-time codegen (no reflection), compact binary protocol with meta-packing, little-endian layout optimized for modern CPUs. Unique features that other fast serializers don't have: - Cross-language without IDL files (Rust ↔ Python/Java/Go) - Trait object serialization (Box) - Automatic circular reference handling - Schema evolution without coordination Happy to discuss design trade-offs. Benchmarks:…

"Game" is a stretch, but I put together this repo containing a pure Rust app which uses SDL2 and compiles to WASM (and can be run in a browser). Older resources were a bit out of date and a bit too verbose for my purposes, so here's a minimal working example.

tl;dr we built an embeddable stream processing engine in Rust using apache DataFusion, check us out at https://github.com/probably-nothing-labs/denormalized Hey HN, We’d like to showcase a very early version of our embeddable stream processing engine called Denormalized. The rise of DuckDB has abundantly made it clear that even for many workloads of Terabyte scale, a single node system outshines the distributed query engines of previous generation such as Spark, Snowflake etc in terms of both performance and cost. Now a lot of workloads DuckDB is used for were normally…

I built a Rust-powered Wavelet Matrix library for Python. There were surprisingly few practical Wavelet Matrix implementations available for Python, so I implemented one with a focus on performance, usability, and typed APIs. It supports fast rank/select, top-k, quantile, range queries, and even dynamic updates. Feedback welcome!

Hey HN, My friend Sam and I were bored one weekend, and wanted to make something self-contained but still useful. We ended up with Victor [0], a vector database designed to run in the browser. It’s written in Rust, which gives us access to things like super-fast and compact serialization and deserialization, but it’s compiled to WASM and uses web-sys to interact with the browser’s JS APIs to write the database contents to disk. We worked hard on designing it in a way that makes sense for the browser. It uses the private origin file system [1] and stores the vectors in a compact format (one…

Hello! I got quite some feedback on a web server I'm building, so I'm rewriting the server to be faster and easier to use. I (and maybe some other contributors?) have optimized the web server performance, especially for static file serving and reverse proxying (the last use case I optimized for very recently). I also picked a different configuration format and specification, what I believe is easier to write. Automatic TLS is also enabled by default out of the box, you don't need to even enable it manually, like it was in the original server I was building. Yesterday, I released the first…

Hi HN, I'm Holger, a developer who worked in the lighting industry. I built this to scratch my own itch and put it on crates.io and PyPI where nothing like it existed. The old file formats (EULUMDAT from 1990, IES from 1991) still work fine for basic photometry. But the industry is moving toward spectral data – full wavelength distributions instead of just lumen values. The new standards (TM-33, ATLA-S001) are barely supported by existing tools. So this handles both: legacy formats for compatibility, spectral data for anyone who wants to work with the new standards. Stack: Rust core, then…
