I like the idea of using dotenv files, but I dislike having to use different language-specific libraries to read them. To solve this, I created a small utility that lets you prefix any command with "dotenv" to load the ".env" file. This is how I imagine dotenv would work if it had started as a UNIX utility rather than a Node.js library.

Since last time i posted about dotenv-diff a few things has improved - “did you mean” type suggestions - comment warnings flag (every key in your .env.example must have a #comment above or next to the key) -now whenever you run dotenv-diff it will warn you about difference in you example file if its run against your .env file -catch secret keys that you definitely dont want in your example file -smaller bug fixes

Hi HN, I built this because I often work in coworking spaces or do screen sharing, and I've always had this fear of accidentally flashing my .env file with production secrets to the whole room (or recording). It’s a simple VS Code extension that opens .env files in a custom grid editor. It automatically masks any value longer than 6 characters so I can safely open the file to check keys without exposing the actual secrets. Hi! I've been frustrated with the secret sharing situation in serverside javascript land for a while; the common thing is to just toss .env files around on Slack to get someone's app working, or involves some kind of convoluted setup to get a blob from a storage and turn it into environment variables via commands I have to copy paste every time. But everyone uses secret storage providers, e.g. shared password vaults, cloud secrets, etc., so why not leverage those as URIs in a JSON file that can be checked in to source control? The problem: My team's secrets lived in a mix of Slack DMs, shared Google Docs, and .env files that definitely weren't in .gitignore at some point.
