Zindex is a development tool that enables efficient searching of compressed text files by creating an index on them. Designed for developers working with large compressed datasets, it allows users to query compressed… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. There's a lot of paid search engine indexation tools out there and I wanted to create my own. Been working as an engineer for over a decade now and my open-source contribution has always been something I wanted to do. Thus I decided to create FastIndex, an open-source search engine indexation alternative to paid solutions such as TagParrot, URLMonitor, Omega Indexer and many more. Not all improvements come from adding complexity — sometimes it's about removing it. PageIndex takes a different approach to RAG. Instead of relying on vector databases or artificial chunking, it builds a hierarchical tree structure from documents and uses reasoning-based tree search to locate the most relevant sections. This mirrors how humans approach reading: navigating through sections and context rather than matching embeddings. As a result, the retrieval feels transparent, structured, and explainable. It moves RAG away from approximate "semantic vibes" and toward explicit reasoning…

This is a Postgres extension that can determine if a query should have an index. For example, for this table: create table book( id int primary key, title text not null ); You can run `index_advisor()` to see if there should be an index on a select statement: select * from index_advisor('select book.id from book where title = $1'); And it will return (summarized): {"CREATE INDEX ON public.book USING btree (title)"} It works particularly well with pg_stat_statements[0] which tracks execution statistics of all SQL statements executed on your Postgres database. It leans heavily on HypoPG[1], an…

I wrote this because I needed to search a lot of files, including some archives, for files in a date range but couldn't find any good tools. Also I never liked find's option syntax. I think most people already know SQL (or at least it's easier to learn) and a much better match for this task.

Hey all, Last time when we were on HackerNews [1], we received a lot of feedback, and we incorporated most of it. - We have changed our name from grep.help to usegrasp.com - A privacy policy page - Bulk import - Pricing page We are happy to introduce a new feature: a personalized answer search engine that provides direct citations to the content on the page. I'd like to invite everyone to try out DontBeEvil.rip, an experimental search engine for developers. tl;dr $ alias rip="curl -G -H 'Accept: text/plain' --url https://dontbeevil.rip/search --data-urlencode " $ rip 'q=Heartbleed bug' DontBeEvil.rip is a year long experiment to see if a small team can build a developer-focused search engine that is self-sustaining on $10 monthly subscriptions. It works by only indexing high-quality resources that are relevant to developers. You won't get useless listicles because we'll never crawl them. Relevant urls are harvested from HN,…

LiquidIndex 2.0▲134I'm building LiquidIndex, an RAG API service that makes it easy to add personalized context to AI apps. Instead of building a whole system to upload, process, and search through a user’s files or notes, you just call a few APIs. It handles the hard parts - like connecting to Notion or Google Drive, breaking the data into usable pieces, and making it searchable. Then, when you want to answer a question using that data, you just query it, and it gives you the most relevant results - optionally with an LLM-generated answer. No pipelines, no infrastructure, no headaches. Here are the core APIs:…

Hey HN, Robert from Laminar (lmnr.ai) here. We built Index - new SOTA Open Source browser agent. It reached 92% on WebVoyager with Claude 3.7 (extended thinking). o1 was used as a judge, also we manually double checked the judge. At the core is same old idea - run simple JS script in the browser to identify interactable elements -> draw bounding boxes around them on a screenshot of a browser window -> feed it to the LLM. What made Index so good: 1. We essentially created browser agent observability. We patched Playwright to record the entire browser session while the agent operates,…

Hey HN! I've build a simple tool to index and search your documents. This uses two great open source libraries: apache tika (for extracting content from docs) and apache lucene (for searching). It's been built with kotlin ktor as a web framework. You can index all kind of files (i.e doc, docx, xls, ppt, pdf, txt, html even ORC pdfs) and then search them using very advanced queries like "always contain X", "never contain X", "X near Y", wildcard search, proper stemming support etc. We're using it on my work where we have hundreds of thousands of doc/docx/pdf files and it works…

This is a vector index I built that supports insertion and k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) querying, optimized for GPUs. It operates entirely in CUDA and can process queries on half a billion vectors in under 200 milliseconds. The codebase is structured as a standalone library with an HTTP API for remote access. It’s intended for high-performance search tasks—think similarity search, AI model retrieval, or reinforcement learning replay buffers. The codebase is located at https://github.com/rodlaf/BinaryGPUIndex.

I had already posted the project a couple of years ago, and it gained some interest, but a lot of stuff has been done since then, especially regarding performance, a completely new JSON store, a REST API, various internals refactored, an improved JSONiq based query engine allowing updates, implementing set-oriented join optimizations, a now already dated web UI, a new Kotlin based CLI, a Python and TypeScript client to ease the use of Sirix... First prototypes from a precursor stem already from 2005. So, what is it all about? The system uses ideas from ZFS (a keyed index trie, storing…

My Downloads folder had been left unkept for a really long time and cleaning it up using Finder was quite cumbersome. So I started creating a simple app to help me filter out and delete or move the files in the folder. It started out very basic and the filtering options genuinely helped me clean out the Downloads folder, then as I thought of more features I would like to see in a file manager I started to add them. Some of the features are: - Fuzzy go to folder/file where you only need to write a few letters of a full path, get suggestions and can jump to the correct path instantly -…

I've been building a tool that changes how LLM coding agents explore codebases, and I wanted to share it along with some early observations. Typically claude code globs directories, greps for patterns, and reads files with minimal guidance. It works in kind of the same way you'd learn to navigate a city by walking every street. You'll eventually build a mental map, but claude never does - at least not any that persists across different contexts. The Recursive Language Models paper from Zhang, Kraska, and Khattab at MIT CSAIL introduced a cleaner framing. Instead of cramming everything into…
