My book on "GNU grep and ripgrep" is free to download today and tomorrow [1][2] Code snippets, example files and sample chapters are available on GitHub [3] The book uses plenty of examples and regular expressions are also covered from scratch. The book is suitable for beginners as well as serves as a reference. Hope you find it useful, I would be grateful for your feedback and suggestions. I used pandoc+xelatex [4] to generate the pdf. Hey HN, we’re Adi and Arnav. A few months ago, we hit a wall trying to get LLMs to answer questions over research papers and instruction manuals. Everything worked fine, until the answer lived inside an image or diagram embedded in the PDF. Even GPT‑4o flubbed it (we recently tried O3 with the same, and surprisingly it flubbed it too). Naive RAG pipelines just pulled in some text chunks and ignored the rest. We took an invention disclosure PDF (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ySzQgbNZkC5dPLtE3pnnVL2rW_9...) containing an IRR‑vs‑frequency graph and asked GPT “From…

I'd like to invite everyone to try out DontBeEvil.rip, an experimental search engine for developers. tl;dr $ alias rip="curl -G -H 'Accept: text/plain' --url https://dontbeevil.rip/search --data-urlencode " $ rip 'q=Heartbleed bug' DontBeEvil.rip is a year long experiment to see if a small team can build a developer-focused search engine that is self-sustaining on $10 monthly subscriptions. It works by only indexing high-quality resources that are relevant to developers. You won't get useless listicles because we'll never crawl them. Relevant urls are harvested from HN,…

Substage▲183Hey all! I’m a solo indie dev and I’ve been working on Substage – a Mac app that docks under your Finder window and lets you interact with your files using natural language. Stuff like: • Convert to webp • zip these up • Author of this PDF? • Download this file: • Is this really a PNG? • What's 5 foot 9 in cm? • Open in TextMate Substage converts your prompt into a Terminal command using an LLM (GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, Mistral, or your own local model), runs it, and summarises the output. If it detects something risky, it’ll pause for confirmation before running. Commands run locally on your…

I wrote this because I needed to search a lot of files, including some archives, for files in a date range but couldn't find any good tools. Also I never liked find's option syntax. I think most people already know SQL (or at least it's easier to learn) and a much better match for this task.

Hey HN! We're Phil and Ming, co-founders of Retake (https://github.com/getretake/retake). Retake is an open source tool that adds keyword and semantic (i.e hybrid) search to databases. We’ve started by extending the capabilities of Postgres with an SDK for lightning-fast queries. We built Retake to fix two issues: keeping vectors in sync with Postgres in real time is difficult, and most vector databases aren’t built for hybrid search. A quick refresher: “keyword search” refers to a technique where results are scored based on the appearance of exact words or terms.…

Think interactive grep for text files, PDFs, DOCXs, etc, but word/token based instead of regex and line based, so you can search across lines easily. Docfd aims to provide good UX via integration with common text editors and PDF viewers, so you can jump directly to a search result with a single key press. --- I originally wrote this tool to help me dig through text/markdown notes, since very often I want to search for a phrase of sorts that may span across multiple lines, but constructing the corresponding multiline regex is a bit painful (especially painful if I want to account…

Hey HN! I've build a simple tool to index and search your documents. This uses two great open source libraries: apache tika (for extracting content from docs) and apache lucene (for searching). It's been built with kotlin ktor as a web framework. You can index all kind of files (i.e doc, docx, xls, ppt, pdf, txt, html even ORC pdfs) and then search them using very advanced queries like "always contain X", "never contain X", "X near Y", wildcard search, proper stemming support etc. We're using it on my work where we have hundreds of thousands of doc/docx/pdf files and it works…
