Products that do what ETF Comparison – See Correlation, Overlap, and Holdings does
Hey HN, We recently launched a tool to compare ETFs that I wanted to share with the HN community. I've always found it difficult to quickly contrast important metrics between ETFs and dig into holdings. Existing tools are usually behind paywalls and provide limited functionality. We let you see side-by-side data like AUM, Yield, and Expense Ratio, but it also provides full holding details and correlation and overlap details as well. Correlation Data: The tool shows you which stocks and ETFs are most correlated, uncorrelated, and inversely correlated with each ETF. This can be helpful for…

During the start of the year I was thinking how could I bet against certain stocks (in my case mainly Tesla) without using derivatives and the risks that come with them. After I had success betting on the oil price with a highly correlated investment fond, I came to the conclusion that negative correlations could be used to bet against the price of other assets. Unfortunately, it is not easy to find correlations between assets if you don't know which assets to compare in the first place. So I created a website where you can find the 10 highest and 10 lowest correlations of certain assets.

Here's a little side project I’ve been working on: https://totalrealreturns.com/ The Total Real Returns chart demonstrates the preservation or growth of real wealth more clearly than conventional (nominal-dollar, price-only) stock charts, because: (1) we include the effects of inflation-diminished purchasing power, and (2) we include the effects of reinvesting dividends from the initial investment. I found it harder to explain the y-axis in words than it was to do the math, so please let me know if you think the "baguettes" explanation on the homepage helps. I was up until 4am…

I've always found raw SEC filings painful to parse, so I built a site to make institutional holding data more accessible and visual. I recently updated the data to analyze the peter thiel stock portfolio (tracking Founders Fund and associated vehicles) for Q3 2025. It's interesting to see the divergence from standard tech indices—heavy on defense/hard tech and very little consumer SaaS. You can see the visualization here: https://www.13radar.com/guru/peter-thiel Would love any feedback on the UI or suggestions on other metrics I should calculate from the 13F data.

Hi HN users, My project is weeklycharts.org. This project generates and shows a weekly list of strong stocks and ETFs. My definition of a "strong" stock is a stock that is rising, upward trending and advancing stock. This project is based on an idea which I have after reading the book, "How I Made $2,000,000 in the Stock Market" by Nicolas Darvas. I have used UNIX shell scripts and GNU Awk to calculate the statistic; and HTML, CSS and SVG for presentation; and GNU Make for building this project. The stock prices and industry profile of the companies are sourced from finance.yahoo.com. I…

Hi HN, A while ago I had a mildly depressing realization. Back in 2010, I had around $60k. Like a "responsible" person, I used it as a down payment on an apartment. Recently, out of curiosity, I calculated what would have happened if I had instead put that money into NVIDIA stock. I should probably add some context. For over 10 years I've worked as a developer on trading platforms and financial infrastructure. I made a rule for myself - never trade on the market. In 2015, when Bitcoin traded about 300 usd, my brother and I were talking about whether it was a bubble. He made a bold claim that…

Hey guys. For the past 8 months, we've been bootstrapping Vuru and the advice of the HN community has helped us shape our product and business. We are really appreciative of all that we've gotten out of the community and we want to share what we've built. We've recently launched our product, have some paying customers (woohoo!), and we'd love to get your feedback on anything and everything. Check us out at http://www.vuru.co (clickable link in the comments). In advance, thanks for your time!

Hey HN, I'm Steve, co-founder of Factor.fyi, a new data platform for querying and visualizing financial datasets using SQL. During the pandemic, I took much more of an active role in managing my portfolio. I wanted to be able to make informed decisions about the investments I was making, and explore financial data in new ways. Market and Econ data are some of the most talked-about and widely-available datasets out there, but I was frustrated by the lack of options to answer questions I had, like, "What would have happened if I had started dollar-cost averaging VTI back in 2013?"[1] Or, "How…
