24 alternatives to Forest Watch

Keep track of forests in your area by viewing changes in tree cover over time. I’ve build this as a demo of what you can do with the ArcGIS library and the geo data that is offered by Global Forest Watch and Esri. Don’t forget to click the history button. Works best on desktop! The demo is build with React and open source: https://github.com/vnglst/koenvangilst.nl/tree/main/app/(bla...

Forest Watch is a web-based tool that displays changes in tree cover over time for any location, built as a demonstration of the ArcGIS library combined with Global Forest Watch and Esri geospatial data. I've been working on this project for about 4 years. It began as terrain only because world wide elevation data was publicly available. I then added buildings from OpenStreetMap (crowd sourced) and more recently from Overture Maps data. Some computer vision/machine learning advancements [1] in the past few years have made it possible to estimate tree canopy heights using satellite imagery alone making it possible to finally add trees to the map. The data isn't perfect, but it's within +/- 3 meters of so. Good enough to give a general idea for any location on Earth. Happy to answer…

I built an interactive explorer for Kubernetes resources spec A few things included: - Tree view with schema, type and description of all native resources - History changes since version X (properties added/removed/modified) - Examples of some resources that you can easily copy as a starting point - Supports all versions since X, including the newly released 1.32 - I also want to add support for popular CRD, but I’m not sure how I’ll do that yet, I’m open to suggestions! Everything is auto generated based on the OpenAPI spec, with some manual inputs for examples and external links.…

I made a web app to generate 3D models of real places on earth from land cover and elevation data. Click anywhere on the map to get a polygon, and then click "generate". It should work at most scales, but if your watershed or region selection is too large, the result can be less exciting because it's so flat. As a warning, the 3D models can sometimes be too much for my phone. It's nicer on desktop. I'm still working better on mobile support. The land cover data I'm using gives a cool effect, but at some point I'd like to add in global imagery and clouds. The backend is a Python thread…

GUI disk analyzers are great for figuring out what's filling up your laptop/desktop drive. On containers or remote servers, the options are limited to purely text based utilities (e.g. du) or list-centric TUIs (e.g. ncdu) which are usually limited to viewing one directory at a time. I created leaves to fill that gap. Inspired by classic utilities like WinDirStat and KDirStat, it uses a 2-dimensional treemap^1 visualization to show the entire directory hierarchy with proportionally sized rectangles. It's performant enough to handle millions of files, thanks to Rust and multi-threading.…
