24 alternatives to Hyperparam: OSS tools for exploring datasets locally in the browser
For the last year I’ve been developing Hyperparam — a collection of small, fast, dependency-free open-source libraries designed for data scientists and ML engineers to actually look at their data. - Hyparquet: Read any Parquet file in browser/node.js - Icebird: Explore Iceberg tables without needing Spark/Presto - HighTable: Virtual scrolling of millions of rows - Hyparquet-Writer: Export Parquet easily from JS - Hyllama: Read llama.cpp .gguf LLM metadata efficiently CLI for viewing local files: npx hyperparam dataset.parquet Example dataset on Hugging Face Space:…

Hey HN! We’ve built Pretzel, an open-source data exploration and visualization tool that runs fully in the browser and can handle large files (200 MB CSV on my 8gb MacBook air is snappy). It’s also reactive - so if, for example, you change a filter, all the data transform blocks after it re-evaluate automatically. You can try it here: https://pretzelai.github.io/ (static hosted webpage) or see a demo video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73wNEun_L7w You can play with the demo CSV that’s pre-loaded (GitHub data of text-editor adjacent projects) or upload…

I built a Rust-based CLI/terminal UI for inspecting Parquet files—data, metadata, and row-group-level structure—right from the terminal. If someone sent me a Parquet file, I used to open DuckDB or Polars just to see what was inside. Now I can do it with one command. Repo: https://github.com/kaushiksrini/parqeye

OpenSheet▲86Hi folks. I've been doing some experiments on how LLMs could get more handy in the day to day of working with files (CSV, Parquet, etc). Earlier last year, I built https://datakit.page and evolved it over and over into an all in-browser experience with help of duckdb-wasm. Got loads of feedbacks and I think it turned into a good shape with being an adhoc local data studio, but I kept hearing two main things/issues: Why can't the AI also change cells in the file we give to it? Why can't we modify this grid ourselves? So besides the whole READ and text-to-SQL flows, what seemed…

I started 6 months ago when I wanted to look inside datasets from Hugging Face. I was not satisfied with existing libraries. So, naturally, I built my own library from scratch. Parquet is a very complicated format. It has 22 data types, 9 encodings, 8 compression codecs. Previous parquet js libraries went abandoned due to the complexity. However, I can confidently say that Hyparquet is now the most conformant parquet parser in existence. It can open more files than PyArrow and DuckDB. I dare you to find a file that Hyparquet can’t open! In addition to supporting all the parquet files,…

G'day, HN! I'm one of the maintainers of `llm`. I've been working alongside a trusty group of contributors to bring this project to life, and we're now at a point where we're ready to share it with the world. Large language models (LLMs) are taking the computing world by storm due to their emergent abilities that allow them to perform a wide variety of tasks, including translation, summarization, code generation, and even some degree of reasoning. However, the ecosystem around LLMs is still in its infancy, and it can be difficult to get started with these models. `llm` is a one-stop shop for…

We've been building data pipelines that scrape websites and extract structured data for a while now. If you've done this, you know the drill: you write CSS selectors, the site changes its layout, everything breaks at 2am, and you spend your morning rewriting parsers. LLMs seemed like the obvious fix — just throw the HTML at GPT and ask for JSON. Except in practice, it's more painful than that: - Raw HTML is full of nav bars, footers, and tracking junk that eats your token budget. A typical product page is 80% noise. - LLMs return malformed JSON more often than you'd expect, especially with…

I recently built a small open-source tool to benchmark different LLM API endpoints — including OpenAI, Claude, and self-hosted models (like llama.cpp). It runs a configurable number of test requests and reports two key metrics: • First-token latency (ms): How long it takes for the first token to appear • Output speed (tokens/sec): Overall output fluency Demo: https://llmapitest.com/ Code: https://github.com/qjr87/llm-api-test The goal is to provide a simple, visual, and reproducible way to evaluate performance across different LLM providers, including…

Hey HN! We just released the open-source version of Renumics Spotlight, a data exploration and analysis tool for multimodal datasets. Spotlight integrates seamlessly with pandas and supports rich data types like images, videos, and meshes. You can load anything that fits in a DataFrame and view it through a customizable GUI featuring multiple interactive widgets: a data table, similarity map, histograms, scatter plots, and more. In the past, we have used Spotlight for exploratory data analysis and tackling various model and data-related problems in our machine learning projects. What are…

Hi HackerNews, Lately, I have seen an explosion in posts offering paid APIs/services to get unstructured data into LLMs (i.e. langchain extract, ragflow, unstructured, unstract, just to name a few) and I have been largely disappointed by them, either because they fail to implement multimodal support, fail to give good context for "really tricky" PDFs / Word docs / Powerpoints, or are just plain difficult to use. In light of all these posts I figured I'd share my solution that has been working smoothly for me and my clients. I put it up on GitHub for free so you can check it…
