I created Cloud Looking Glass as a CS grad research project to build a better status page for public cloud platforms — independent and based on what users actually experience (in my experience, cloud providers tend to underreport events on public status pages). I modeled it as a time series problem: all tests are repeated every 5 minutes from three unrelated cloud accounts per platform (currently ~1,000 tests/min). Hi HN! During the last few years, I worked on a few applications built with Go, running on AWS Lambda. As I got to know the platform better, I started to find Go & Lambda to be a really productive combination. The applications were fast, and they ended up being much cheaper to run than what my team & I had built before. I recently got tired of subscribing to dozens of status pages (Cloudflare, Vercel, Twilio, GitHub, OpenAI) just to stay ahead of the outages that seem to happen almost every week. This is a service I've built to provide equirectangular cloud maps of the whole Earth, updated every 3 hours, for free. It's based on infrared and visible light data from EUMETSAT, processed to enhance the clouds and try to reduce the impact of surface temperatures on the final image. I built it because it's surprisingly hard to find these kinds of images in a format that's useful to developers and hobbyists. I was building a 3D ISS tracker and wanted to include live clouds but couldn't find anything good, so I got sidetracked, and here we are.

We’ve been building a Cloud-Managed Hypervisor that makes running applications on your own servers as effortless as the public cloud. Over my career I’ve watched the transition from on-prem to public cloud. The cloud paradigm shift is as much about empowering engineers as it is about elastic infrastructure, but the tooling for on-prem and private clouds is at best heavyweight and at worst stuck in the last century. I find myself reaching for Workers, R2, D1, and KV for almost every project lately, so I wanted to capture that sentiment in a single, slightly over-the-top page.
