Hi HN. I had faced an issue where I wanted to know how a place I was travelling to looked like. Like everyone else I looked at google maps and snap chat too. But Google streetview images were usually old and snapchat snaps lacked control. So I built GeoQuests for anyone who wants to know what’s going on on Earth. You drop a quest at a real location. People see it on the map, go there, and complete it by taking a photo when they’re close enough. I just redesigned an old (1 year) project and would appreciate any feedback. The site has no real purpose other than allowing you to explore the large amount of imagery gathered by Google. Google released an API in May to get fetch 3D Tiles of anywhere on Earth. Using this in standard 3D engines like Blender is tricky because (1) the tiles are in a geographic coordinate system (2) you get a lot of little tiles at varying quality levels I wanted to simplify this so all you need to do is get an API key, select a map region and a zoom level, and get one combined glTF file that you can throw into any engine. I love culture + travel, and one of my favorite pastimes is dropping into random streets on Google Street View. I find myself often texting people, "where are you?" so I wrote this little iPhone app that lets me text them a special link. When they click the link, it uses the HTML5 geolocation API to report their location and shows it on a map. http://whru.at/ It's only as accurate as the HTML5 geolocation API, but I've been finding it pretty useful. My friend and I made a fully featured gaming geoguessr - complete with 360 degree panoramas, movement, leaderboards, and multiplayer. We had made a Fortnite geoguessr a while back, and although this was well received, our goal always was to bring the worlds of all games to the browser. A much harder task considering the scale and scope of many open world games. We had to make a bunch of tools to be able to achieve this.
