A developer reverse engineered their cable modem to convert it into a software-defined radio (SDR). This project, categorized as life and fun, demonstrates the technical process of repurposing consumer hardware for… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. There are lots of RTL-SDR applications, but you have to install them. I used the HTML5 USB API that exists in Chrome (did you know about it?) to build one that you can run straight from your browser, on your computer or your Android phone.

Hey Hackers. This is a project I solo-developed that turns completed PCB assemblies into an easy to use boardview with some accompanying boardscans. There are lots of easier and better ways of doing this, but this is an experimentation to do it as cheaply as possible, with the highest quality and lowest chance of errors. The technical details are in the link. Most public boardviews are almost entirely the result of industrial espionage, other than a few encrypted subscription based software platforms that provide extensive access. The process output is released as donationware, as my main…

Hello, we're Max and Byran from MUREX Robotics, a high school robotics team from Exeter, New Hampshire. We are super proud to have made this open source piece of technology! It is only 6.9 dollars (actually!) from JLCPCB :) I hope you like it. You can find us at [email protected] and [email protected] as well if you have any questions. We will be putting a small run of these boards for sale somewhere (we have <25 units of stock), probably for $10+shipping. Let us know if you're interested in more! Board files for everything we make is here:…

Hi everyone, I recently published a small open-source project. It’s a minimal network packet analyzer written in Go — designed more like a learning toy than a replacement for Wireshark. It currently supports parsing basic protocols like TLS, DNS, and HTTP, and includes a tiny fuzzing engine to test payload responses. You can inspect raw packet content directly from the terminal. The output is colored for readability, and the code structure is kept simple and clear. The entire program is very small — just about 400 lines of Go code. I know it’s not anywhere near Wireshark’s level, and I still…

Hi HN, r2t2 is a command-line tool for transmitting data through sound using the PC speaker on the motherboard. The name of the tool is a reference to the R2-D2 robot from Star Wars :) In short, you type some message and it gets FSK modulated and transmitted via sound through the PC speaker. Note that this is the speaker/buzzer that you connect to the motherboard and not the regular speakers that you connect to the sound card. I also made a simple web page that listens to the sound emitted by r2t2 and decodes the received messages. The page can be used by simply opening it on your phone…

Hi Hacker News, This is definitely out of my comfort zone. I just wanted to show you guys because I'm super proud of it. It's a 100% faithful recreation based off of the schematics, patents, and ROMs that were found online. So please watch the video and tell me what you think https://youtu.be/auOlZXI1VxA The reason why I think this is relevant is because I've been a programmer for 25 years and AI scares the shit out of me. I'm not a programmer anymore. I'm something else now. I don't know what it is but it's multi-disciplinary, and it doesn't involve writing code myself--for…

A pager▲104Hello HN, I basically don't use notifications for anything. The noise is too much. Slack is too loud. Email is too slow. But sometimes you do need a note in your face. I found myself missing 1990s pagers. I wanted a digital equivalent - something that does one thing: beep until I ack it. So I built UDP-7777. Concept: - 0% Cloud: It listens on UDP Port 7777. No accounts, no central servers. You don't need Tailscale/ZeroTier/WG/etc, it's just easy for device sets. - CAPCODES: It maps your IP address (LAN or Tailscale) to a retro 10-digit "CAPCODE" that looks like a phone number…
