Howdy, gang; After almost two weeks of sitting in Apple's approval queue, my new app Timebar is finally available. I think it has a pretty innovative UI feature, so I wanted to float it by Hacker News. It's a timer app that turns your Mac's menu bar into a sort of virtual hourglass. Your menu bar starts out tinted blue (or whatever colour you pick) and it slowly drains from right-to-left until your time is up. It works very well for situations where you want to keep track of time, but don't need to be super precise. The menu bar is easy to glance up at, and it doesn't take long to happen…

I am a software developer and in the last few months after recently becoming a father I was barely finding time for a proper workout. Recently I was reading about new research on Snack Exercises and how beneficial mini workouts of less than 2mins every so often, during the day are to our body. So, I decided to build an iOS App for me and others to help with this. The app generates a list of exercises that I need to tick to complete daily or loose my streak. The algorithm takes into account muscle groups and balancing the exercises to hit most main muscles. I also stayed going through all…

I've been working on a side project called Streak.ly with a friend of mine for the past month or so; it's intended to help keep you motivated to do otherwise mundane daily tasks (like do 10 pushups, read for an hour, etc.) by letting you log "streaks" — consecutive days in a row of doing something. It's in private alpha/beta/gamma/whatever right now (has some rough edges to clean up), but is more or less functionally complete and pretty stable. I'm a big fan of the Seinfeld calendar, and have seen other services which do similar things but were unsatisfying to use, either from an aesthetic…

I was on the eternal quest of searching for a properly gamified productivity app that keeps me motivated throughout the day and in the long term. After a few months of a fruitless search, I made up my mind and decided to build it myself! I've since launched FocuMon a little over a month ago. Quite a few early users told me it has helped them stay focused, so I'm excited to share it on HN for ya'll to try it out and let me know how I can make it better! FocuMon is like an idle Pokémon game where you can collect, level up, and evolve cute monsters by being productive! It puts a reward layer on…

I built pbar.io because I was tired of SSH'ing into servers to check if my data processing scripts were still running, or worse, having them finish/crash without knowing. It's a simple REST API that lets you create and update progress bars from anywhere. The same progress bar can be viewed as terminal output (with ANSI colors), in a browser, or consumed as JSON. I'm actually tracking this HN discussion with pbar. The progress bar increases with each comment - watch it live as we discuss! Web: https://pbar.io/Y8yg3BG Terminal: curl…
