Driving home from work one day, I wanted to know how many people we knew the names of who lived during the Roman era. Searching around, I found lists of Consuls and officials, but nothing that covered ordinary people or even most people like freedmen and slaves. So I ended up building a pipeline to process the more than 500k Latin inscriptions in the Epigraphic Database Clauss-Slaby https://edcs.hist.uzh.ch/en/ and extract the names of people (and attempt to cluster them, but this is a work in progress). There are databases where Classicists have done this manually for…

Introducing Biblos, a simple tool for semantic search and summarization of Bible passages. Leveraging Chroma for vector search with BAAI BGE embeddings, semantically find related verses across the Bible. The tool employs Anthropic's Claude LLM model for generating high-quality summaries of retrieved passages, contextualizing your search topic. Built on a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture, the app implements a simple Streamlit Web UI using Python. Deployed using render.com, the app is available at https://biblos.app Note: Search by just topic/keywords, e.g.…

Made this in a free evening. Index an permissive license translation of the Bible (WEB) into a RAG database to allow returning passages of similar semantic meaning. Lots of fun. For example, "more money more problems" returns Ecclesiastes 5:9-13 which, I'll just say, is spot on.. "Moreover the profit of the earth is for all. The king profits from the field. He who loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver, nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity. When goods increase, those who eat them are increased; and what advantage is there to its owner, except to feast on…

Built an auditable AI (Bible) translation pipeline: Hebrew/Greek source packets -> verse JSON with notes rolling up to chapters, books, and testaments. Final texts compiled with metrics (TTR, n-grams). This is the first full-text example as far as I know (Gen Z bible doesn't count). There are hallucinations and issues, but the overall quality surprised me. LLMs have a lot of promise translating and rendering 'accessible' more ancient texts. The technology has a lot of benefit for the faithful, that I think is only beginning to be explored.

I use AI while reading the Bible and I suspect others do too. It's helpful whether you're struggling with the Elizabethan English, or want added context/want to know what theologians say about a passage. So I thought, why not make the AI come to you? TIA for any feedback!

Hey HN, wanted to introduce FaithStreet to you all. This has been a huge undertaking for us as we've brought together a huge trove of poorly organized information over the last year and built a service that connects thousands of people to churches across the US. Link: http://www.FaithStreet.com/ If you have ever experienced a church website or considered attending a church, you may have already realized that its a space sorely lacking decent tech. We don't think that faith and technology are mutually exclusive, and the 7000+ churches who have signed up in the last two months seem to be…

SourceLibrary.org is currently the world’s largest online library of translated ancient sources. It contains over 15,000 books translated from dozens of languages (Latin, Greek, Chinese, Sanskrit, Arabic, Hebrew, Egyptian, etc)—from sacred texts to early science. Our vision is to make ancient wisdom accessible to both people and AI. Did you know that less than 3% of the Latin Renaissance has ever been translated into English? This is ironic, because translations of ancient Greek wisdom texts are historically credited with helping to ignite the Renaissance. Yet, the Renaissance itself was…

Hey all! I just launched OpenTheo, a free collection of transcribed Bible teachings and other Christian material. So far, I've transcribed over 10,000 hours of content for the first time, including teachings from Steve Gregg, Tim Keller, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and more. Transcripts are fully interactive. You can click on any words in the transcript to instantly start playing the audio at that point in time. The currently playing portion of the transcript is also underlined to make it easier to follow along. Transcripts are produced using ggerganov's Whisper.cpp…
