We now have available seven decades of hourly weather data starting from 1950 for any location in the world, thanks to the recent publication of ERA5 reanalysis data from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Hi HN, I built WARN Firehose because I was frustrated trying to track layoff data across the US. The WARN Act requires companies with 100+ employees to file public notices 60 days before mass layoffs — but the data is scattered across 50 state websites with different formats, broken links, and no API. WARN Firehose scrapes every state workforce agency daily and normalizes the data into a single database going back to 1988. I built a weather and hurricane tracking site for the Eastern Caribbean islands (https://dewedda.com). PHP, MySQL, Cloudflare, Visual Crossing API, Leaflet.js for maps. The interesting part wasn't the stack. It was realizing how much the interpretation layer matters when you're building for a specific region. Wind descriptions, "feels like" calculations, condition summaries, all tuned for temperate climates by default. I've been reworking them for the Eastern Caribbean audience. I'd like share about my sideproject https://gribstream.com It is an API to extract weather forecasting data from the National Blend of Models (NBM) https://vlab.noaa.gov/web/mdl/nbm and the Global Forecast System (GFS) https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/weather-climate-models/gl... . I (Max) built this web app with two friends (Tristan and Shelby) to aid in planning travel and events. Usually you plan things far enough out (say, 3-6 months) that there’s no reliable forecast. So historical data is your best bet. We’ve observed that the last few years is a much better indicator of what the weather will be like than most data sources which aggregate from 1900 or even 1950. I've been working on linecast, a free and open source collection of six terminal applications: weather, radar, sunshine, moon, tides, and maps. It's as if the Old Farmer's Almanac was built for Minitel.
