Your open-source, local second brain for every AI
Kuku is a native macOS markdown editor for local note-taking that stores files as plain text with wikilinks, backlinks, and graph visualization. Built with Tauri rather than Electron, it works entirely offline without… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes.

Hi HN, Nick here. We’re launching OpenKnowledge (https://openknowledge.ai/), a “what you see is what you get” markdown editor that has direct integrations with Claude, Codex, and other agents. Available as MacOS app or Web UI+CLI. Fully free/local and OSS. We built this because we wanted a Notion-like experience for writing and sharing markdown files across our team. Obsidian is the best alternative we tried, but found it doesn’t have a true WYSWIG UI and it didn’t integrate well with Claude/Codex outside of community plugins. So we built OpenKnowledge. It takes…

Inspired by the design and UI/UX of apps like Notion, and utility of open-source apps like StackEdit, I decided to create a minimalistic, local-only WYSIWYG Markdown editor. Some features worth highlighting: - Monaco editor and Prettier integration for code snippets - Tables (apparently the holy grail of WYSIWYG editing) - Embeds (for CodePen, CodeSandbox and YouTube, most useful for HTML or JSON exports) - Accepts Markdown paste-in, and "exports"/generates HTML, Markdown and JSON outputs - Collaboration (with real-time awareness and initial commenting system, available only when…

Hi HN, I built Ephe, open-source markdown paper for daily todos and thoughts. No sign-up, no ads, no subscriptions, no AI. ## Why I made this We have plenty of Markdown editors. And too many overwhelming to-do apps. But few tools combine both in a way that’s lightweight and focused. I thought that all I need is a single page to organize today. So I built Ephe. It uses CodeMirror v6, React(v19, React Compiler) and Vite with rolldown. ## What makes it different “Ephe” comes from ephemeral. The main goal is to organize what you need to do today. It isn’t for teams. It’s a quiet space for your…

Pinery▲161Hi HN, I'm Heberti, the solo developer working on Pinery. I've spent the last couple of years building Pinery with a single mission: I wanted a tool that bridged the gap between simple Markdown editors and complex layout software like InDesign. Pinery is my attempt at a solution. It combines a clean, distraction-free Markdown editor with a powerful, real-time visual styling mode. You can control typography, spacing, and layout visually, and see the changes instantly. Key features: - Write in Markdown with AI-assisted text tools (leveraging macOS frameworks) - Customize the design with…

I'm not the author of the app (nor i have any connection with them, just a random user). iA Writer and Writer Pro aren't well suited for me as a developer. They feel quite "strange" to me. Mou is a good option (free too) but still missing some features. So far this, this editor is the most complete user-friendly. Hope it helps!

Hi everyone, I have been developing this editor, Ki, for over a year, and have employed it substantially in all kinds of development (including Ki itself) for at least 3 months. I think it is mostly crystallized, thus I'm happy to share it with you today. Its main strength is first-class multi-cursor and structural (syntax) editing, which is a rare combination in the realm of editors (TUI or GUI alike). Hope you'll enjoy it!

Hey HN, In this age of agentic coding I've found myself spending a lot of time reviewing markdown files. Whether it's plans or documentation that I've asked my agent to generate for me, it seems that I spend more time reading markdown than code. I've tried a few different solutions to make it easier to read such as Obsidian however I've found their Vault system to be quite limiting for this use case and I've found TUI solutions to not quite be as friendly to read as I've wanted so I made Marky. Marky is a lightweight desktop application that makes it incredibly easy to read and track your…
