Maki

An efficient AI coding agent. Native Rust TUI. Immediate startup, 60 FPS, low memory. Indexes files instead of reading them, chains tools in a sandbox interpreter. Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Z.AI, OpenRouter, Synthetic, or any OpenAI / Anthropic compatible API.

Maki launched on June 19, 2022 with 84 votes, #411 of 3,005 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 4 years on.

What it does

The Maki API provides access to the Bitcoin blockchain over HTTP. We offer a high availability solution for developers who want to create an app that relies on Bitcoin blockchain data, without provisioning the infrastructure to run a full node.

I got frustrated with existing coding agents and hitting hourly/weekly token limits. So I built Maki, a lightweight Rust TUI with some novel context token reduction techniques. In benchmarks, it reduces cost by 2x and finishes them 2x faster too. Parses 15 languages into skeletons: imports, type defs, function signatures with their line ranges. Costs 59 tok/turn, saves 224 on reads. Reads were ~65% of my tokens, so this one is big. A sandboxed Python interpreter where every tool is an async function. The model gathers 50 reads, greps them, prints the 3 lines that matter. The rest never touches your context. Datadog's MCP server has over 100 tools. Every definition sits in your context on…from maki.sh

Hi HN, Founder here. We built Pica, an open-source platform in Rust to enable agentic AI with three main focus areas: - Access to APIs and tools: Universal SDKs that let AI agents use thousands of external actions without blowing up your context window. - Visibility and traceability: Full audit logs of every decision/action to ensure transparency and accountability. - Alignment with human intentions: Seamless guardrails for autonomous tasks; e.g., restricting certain email actions to human approval. Why this matters: As autonomy in AI grows, we need robust solutions for trust and…

Hello all, I'm a software developer. Over the last few months more and more of my work has turned into using coding agents instead of typing the whole code myself. Usually a few claude sessions at once, sometimes codex, one per feature or per revealed bug. I ran them in a split terminal for a few weeks, and quickly spotted two main problems. The first is that I couldn't easily tell which agent was stuck waiting on me and which was still working, so I'd cycle through sessions and checking on them. The second one: agents sharing a single branch step on each other. Two of them could be editing…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

I've seen some interests in (simulation) video games here on HN so I thought I'd share a short version of our story. More than 6 years ago, me and my friend from university were playing around with an idea of making a game we always wanted to play. We worked on it on weekends but the progress was quite slow, especially due to so many dead ends and wasted effort. Eventually however, we solidified our direction and decided to take the risk to resign from our well paid SWE jobs and work on it full time. It took more than a year but yesterday we have finally released it on Steam:…
