I built a SQLite VFS in Rust that serves cold queries directly from S3 with sub-second performance, and often much faster. It’s called turbolite. It is experimental, buggy, and may corrupt data. I would not trust it with anything important yet. I wanted to explore whether object storage has gotten fast enough to support embedded databases over cloud storage. Filesystems reward tiny random reads and in-place mutation. S3 rewards fewer requests, bigger transfers, immutable objects, and aggressively parallel operations where bandwidth is often the real constraint. This was explicitly inspired…

At Cajal (YC W26) we’re excited to share Talos (https://github.com/cajal-technologies/talos), an open source framework for formal verification of WebAssembly modules in Lean. AI is now writing tons of the code that gets pushed to production. As code generation gets cheaper, verification becomes the bottleneck. We believe in a future where every piece of software comes with a mathematical proof that it does what its author intended - in doing so, eliminating many classes of exploits. Talos is part of the foundation for that. Talos provides a Wasm interpreter optimized for…

Hey everyone! It’s a single executable that you can run on your server using Docker, Systemd, or any other tool you prefer. It provides a simple user-friendly interface to manage all your SQLite databases. Inspired by PhpLiteAdmin, it features a snappy UI and offers power-user functionalities, ability to chat with your database using natural language via OpenAI api, and other features. It’s free to use, with an option for a one-time payment to unlock all features. You can find the demo at https://demo.litequeen.com/ It's early and there's much to add. Some features I think…

Hi, I've made a Dis virtual machine and Limbo programming language compiler (called RiceVM) in Rust. It can run Dis bytecode (for example, Inferno OS applications), compile Limbo programs, and includes a fairly complete runtime with garbage collection, concurrency features, and many of the standard modules from Inferno OS's original implementation. The project is still in an early stage, but if you're interested in learning more about RiceVM or trying it out, you can check out the links below: Project's GitHub repo: https://github.com/habedi/ricevm RiceVM documentation:…

Hey HN! We posted Rivet Actors here previously [1] as an open-source alternative to Cloudflare Durable Objects. Today we've released SQLite storage for actors (Apache 2.0). Every actor gets its own SQLite database. This means you can have millions of independent databases: one for each agent, tenant, user, or document. Useful for: - AI agents: per-agent DB for message history, state, embeddings - Multi-tenant SaaS: real per-tenant isolation, no RLS hacks - Collaborative documents: each document gets its own database with built-in multiplayer - Per-user databases: isolated, scales…

Hi HN, I’m releasing minikv, a distributed key-value and object store in Rust. What is minikv? minikv is an open-source, distributed storage engine built for learning, experimentation, and self-hosted setups. It combines a strongly-consistent key-value database (Raft), S3-compatible object storage, and basic multi-tenancy. I started minikv as a learning project about distributed systems, and it grew into something production-ready and fun to extend. Features/highlights: - Raft consensus with automatic failover and sharding - S3-compatible HTTP API (plus REST/gRPC APIs) - Pluggable…

Hi HN! This is an early proof of concept of a branchable, versioned OLTP + OLAP database that runs on a single, open copy of your data in object storage. If you are familiar with Databricks' LTAP (https://www.databricks.com/company/newsroom/press-releases/d...) announcement from June, you can think of this as aspiring to be a fully open source, Apache 2.0 LTAP alternative with additional data versioning/auditability guarantees that enable audit, as_of queries, and (eventually) revert straight out of the box. How it works: 1. Writes land in vanilla postgres…

I built a Rust binary (~700KB, two dependencies) that snaps onto any Windows application, continuously reads its UI Automation accessibility tree into a SQLite database, and lets external processes control the app via SQL INSERT. The core insight: every GUI application already describes itself as structured text through the accessibility layer (built for screen readers since 1997). Every major AI lab is taking screenshots of this and running vision models on it. DirectShell just reads the text directly. What it does: - Reads every button, field, menu item into a queryable SQLite DB…

xsql is an open-source Rust CLI + TUI for converting SQL schema DDL between database dialects. Instead of text-based rewrites, it parses CREATE TABLE statements into a small intermediate representation (IR), then emits equivalent SQL for the target dialect. This makes conversions safer, testable, and easier to extend. It supports single-file and recursive folder conversion, includes a no-typing interactive TUI, and recently added an experimental IR v2 with constraint support and JSON output for CI and tooling use. Feedback is very welcome, especially on schema portability and IR design.

Hi! I wanted to understand more about databases' internals so I wrote one from scratch. It has a T-SQL inspired syntax with support for functions and procedures. It can be used stand-alone as a SQL engine or with a server allowing for persistence and replication to other connected clients. Performance are nothing near sqlite of course but that's beside the point. It’s a small database engine that can run in a web app as a way to store session data, do small calculations on a web worker, store the document/data the user is editing or facilitate “multiplayer” feature by broadcasting the…
