24 alternatives to LocalGPT – A local-first AI assistant in Rust with persistent memory

I built LocalGPT over 4 nights as a Rust reimagining of the OpenClaw assistant pattern (markdown-based persistent memory, autonomous heartbeat tasks, skills system). It compiles to a single ~27MB binary — no Node.js, Docker, or Python required. Key features: - Persistent memory via markdown files (MEMORY, HEARTBEAT, SOUL markdown files) — compatible with OpenClaw's format - Full-text search (SQLite FTS5) + semantic search (local embeddings, no API key needed) - Autonomous heartbeat runner that checks tasks on a configurable interval - CLI + web interface + desktop GUI - Multi-provider:…

Hey Hacker News! Launching gptengineer.app into beta today. It's like Claude Artifacts, but: - you can edit the code in your fav IDE (two-way github sync) - installs npm packages - automatically picks up build and runtime errors and fixes them - very fast, built with rust The full stack capabilities are built on supabase (prefer to not have to handle auth + user data at this point so this is owned by the user) The seed for this project was an open source experiment, posted about that previously here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36422730 Would love feedback if you give…

Hey Folks! I've been building an open source benchmark for measuring local LLM performance on your own hardware. The benchmarking tool is a CLI written on top of Llamafile to allow for portability across different hardware setups and operating systems. The website is a database of results from the benchmark, allowing you to explore the performance of different models and hardware configurations. Please give it a try! Any feedback and contribution is much appreciated. I'd love for this to serve as a helpful resource for the local AI community. For more check out: - Website:…

Hey HN. I'm Fabien, principal engineer, 25 years shipping production systems (Ruby, Swift, now Rust). I built Moltis because I wanted an AI assistant I could run myself, trust end to end, and make extensible in the Rust way using traits and the type system. It shares some ideas with OpenClaw (same memory approach, Pi-inspired self-extension) but is Rust-native from the ground up. The agent can create its own skills at runtime. Moltis is one Rust binary, 150k lines, ~60MB, web UI included. No Node, no Python, no runtime deps. Multi-provider LLM routing (OpenAI, local GGUF/MLX, Hugging…

Hi HN, Working with multiple projects, I got tired of re-explaining our complex multi-node system to LLMs. Documentation helped, but plain text is hard to search without indexing and doesn't work across projects. I built Linggen to solve this. My Workflow: I use the Linggen VS Code extension to "init my day." It calls the Linggen MCP to load memory instantly. Linggen indexes all my docs like it’s remembering them—it is awesome. One click loads the full architectural context, removing the "cold start" problem. The Tech: Local-First: Rust + LanceDB. Code and embeddings stay on your machine. No…

Hi HN! I left AWS a few months ago and created CodinIT, a local, open-source AI app builder made with remix + Electron. The motivation: I tried one of the popular cloud-based AI app builders, but when I pulled down the app to run locally, it just didn’t work especially with the monthly costs needed to build something half decent without being limited. So I created CodinIT, an app builder that runs fully on your computer, making it easy to switch between CodinIT and coding tools like Cursor or Claude Code. So I've been building ClawMem, an open-source context engine that gives AI coding agents persistent memory across sessions. It works with Claude Code (hooks + MCP) and OpenClaw (ContextEngine plugin + REST API), and both can share the same SQLite vault, so your CLI agent and your voice/chat agent build on the same memory without syncing anything. The retrieval architecture is a Frankenstein, which is pretty much always my process. I pulled the best parts from recent projects and research and stitched them together: [QMD](https://github.com/tobi/qmd) for the…

Built an AI code reviewer using Letta (Python) that I can call natively from Rust applications. The interesting part: real-time streaming works perfectly across the language boundary with zero hassle using RunAgent. The agent runs in Python with persistent memory, leverages the best in house agentic memory management with Letta (Pythonic AI agent framework), and my rust code just uses it (kinda) natively, though Letta has no Rust bindings. And, streaming works like magic. No FFI, no complex bridges - just native async/streaming that feels like calling any Rust librar, but without…

Hi HN! I'm the author of mere.run a local first inference runtime built around an installable CLI. I believe that whenever possible we should use the stuff we already own (like our Mac laptops, decent machines gathering dust, our gaming PC) and the limited electrical power we have easy access to, like the socket in the wall next to most of us. We shouldn't have to send our data to the cloud hoping some T&C will prevent it from being used in a way that we'd regret. Most of the local AI solutions are technical, involved, and land a curious body in some package hell. People are optimizing for…

Semantic context understanding is supported by ast-grep for structured code search and ripgrep for powered grep. I built VT Code in Rust on Ratatui. Quick note on how it works and how I've done my batch embedding engine IgniteMS. The whole thing runs as one process using Rust, reading input, tokenizing, packing batches, keeping the queue full. TensorRT handles inference. Python is only as a wrapper. I built it this way because when you use more than couple of GPUs, the GPUs stop being the problem. CPU cannot feed them fast enough. One A100 can go through batches faster than Python can tokenize and feed, so the GPU just sits there idle waiting for work. Most of my time went into optimizing this. At 8 GPUs that was basically the entire…
