24 alternatives to Makejinja: Automatically generate complex Home Assistant configurations
makejinja can be used to automatically generate files from Jinja templates. This allows you to load variables from external files or create repeating patterns via loops. A very interesting use case for this tool is generating config files for Home Assistant: Using the same language that the built-in templates use, you can greatly simplify your configuration. When creating for example dashboards, it allows you to create a view for each room based on a single common template, dramatically reducing the maintenance overhead of complex dashboards. I originally developed this for my smarthome…

A developer's machine accumulates tools fast. A Rust CLI you compiled last year, a Python formatter installed via `uv`, a language server pulled from npm, a terminal emulator from a curl script, a Go binary built from source. Each came from a different package manager, each with its own install incantation you half-remember. I wanted a way to declare what I need without adopting a complex system like Nix or Ansible just for a single laptop. The result was a plain old Makefile. I wrote a short post on using Make (along with a tiny bash script and fzf) to create a searchable, single-command…

I recently stripped out Django from my personal site and converted it to a static site, using `staticjinja`. I found myself writing a lot of custom code to get my site going because I wanted to use Jinja templating inside Markdown. Once I was done, I decided to strip out `staticjinja` in favour of my own site generator. And so Jinjabread was born!

`makedown` allows you to organise your shell scripts in one or several markdown files, by mix and matching different scripting languages for various commands and needs. zsh/bash/sh, python, javascript or anything else available on your system. Handy for replacing one-line-based package.json scripts or shell-based Makefiles. One can also write documentation and explanations to various commands in the same `.md` file. Most editors highlight correctly most languages in the markdown code blocks, even when you use several scripting languages. Here is a demo .md file…

Hi HN, I built a code generator plugin for IntelliJ that uses LLMs to create repetitive Java code like implementations, tests, and fixtures — based on custom natural-language patterns and annotation-based references. Most tools like Copilot or Cursor aim to be general, but fail to produce code that actually fits a project structure or passes tests. So I made something more explicit: define patterns + reference scope, and generate code consistently. In this demo, 400 lines of Java were generated in 20 seconds — and all tests passed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReBCXKOpW3M…
