Hi HN, I watch A LOT of educational YouTube videos but wasn't forgetting a good chunk of the details because I was only really passively watching. So I made a tool that generates quiz questions/flashcards from YouTube videos, and uses spaced repetition like Anki or Duolingo to keep it in memory. Let me know if you find it cool/useful (or terrible ) or if you want to know a bit about the details!

I'm in my 4th year living in Denmark as an expat, and I finally decided it’s time to properly learn Danish. I do have a Danish girlfriend, after all. One way I’ve been practicing is by trying to text only in Danish, but I often find myself stuck. I start my message in Danish, then hit a wall because I don’t know a word or how to fit something naturally into the sentence. Especially in those cases, I used to give up and translate the entire message from English, which kind of defeats the purpose and interrupts the learning process. So I started prompting GPT. I’d write my message with…

Here is a tool I built initially for myself to help with my German and Greek language studies. It started as a hack for creating Anki cards from native language audio. It extracts the words, finds their base forms (lemmas) and groups the examples by the lemma. At some point I realised that I have a transcription with word level timestamps that opens a lot of other opportunities. So I added a mode to click the first and last word in the transcript and it starts looping with the right gap and repeat count. Another feature I use a lot is selecting an audio fragment, sending a predefined prompt…

It has been a while since I have shared my app, that I made to be able to practice my Danish while chatting with my grilfriend - I often used GPT to write as much as I can in Danish, and I replaced the words I didn't know with {Englis words in curly braces}. While this was great, it was rather annoying to type the prompt always, so I figured a GPT wrapper would work well here. Last time when I launched, it went viral! I was super happy (and grateful!) for all the feedback and excitement — but it also meant my tokens disappeared fast, and many people ended up trying an app that no longer…

Testflight Link: https://testflight.apple.com/join/8YzpXxjz I wanted to be able to practice Spanish vocab while on my commute to work so I created YapCards. It's an iOS app focused on making flashcard studying hands-free & efficient. Like Anki, but entirely spoken. You choose a list to practice, the app reads the prompt out loud (e.g. "What charge does a proton have?"), & you respond by voice. YapCards uses AI to evaluate your response & provide feedback. Some key features: Voice-only practice (no need to look at your screen) AI evaluation & feedback Practice publicly…

I’ve been playing around with local LLMs for the past couple of months and decided to build something that can run on an iPhone. It’s a universal app built with SwiftUI and the excellent ggml library. The model is an SFT fine tuned and 4 bit quantised version of the RedPajama-INCITE-Chat-3B-v1 OSS LLM. It works reasonably well on recent-ish (~3 year old) iPhones, iPads and Macs. It was launched on the App Store yesterday[1] and Product Hunt today[2]. It seems to be reasonably ok at natural language interactions, but given its size, does pretty badly at coding and reasoning. Also, it…

Hey HN! I'm Dris, a 17y/o solo founder. Over the past few weeks, I've been developing LIRA, a free Chrome extension that helps you take notes & get instant answers on any site. Instead of switching tabs or copying/pasting to ChatGPT, just select and right-click text, images, or links to save a note or ask LIRA anything. LIRA can instantly find accurate answers, summaries, and explanations, and automatically highlights correct answers. I made LIRA to help busy students like myself study smarter, not longer! That being said, LIRA is still a work in progress. There may be a few bugs &…

Quizlet, a popular tool among high schoolers and college students used to study for tests recently made it's core functionality paid. In an era where Autodesk, Adobe, and Microsoft hold their proprietary software to their chests, it's exciting to see opensource alternatives come to compete with them. I'm 15, and I'm excited to do my part to keep education free for everyone. https://openlearn.vercel.app
