Note: this is an update to [this](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44568529) "Show HN" post. timep is a state-of-the-art [debug-]trap-based bash profiler that is efficient and extremely accurate. Unlike other profilers, timep records: 1. per-command wall-clock time 2. per-command CPU time, and 3. the hierarchy of parent function calls /subshells for each command the wall-clock + CPU time combination allows you to determine if a particular command is CPU-bound or IO-bound, and the hierarchical logging gives you a map of how the code actually executed. The standout…

hiSHtory is a better shell history. It stores your shell history in context (what directory you ran the command it, whether it succeeded or failed, how long it took, etc). This is all stored locally and end-to-end encrypted for syncing to to all your other computers. All of this is easily queryable via Control-R and via the hishtory CLI. This means from your laptop, you can easily find that complex bash pipeline you wrote on your server, and see the context in which you ran it.

So first, what are we? A Clubhouse inside the terminal, where people can take a break, chill, chat with others all around the globe, listen to music, play some games, or paint on a live artboard :). ssh late.sh (or use the companion CLI) That's all. No passwords. No OAuth. No accounts. Your SSH key is your identity. Honestly, I've been a little nervous to post this. I wanted the Clubhouse to be something I'm genuinely proud of before sharing, and I think we are finally there :) There is so much here, so I'll really try to focus on the core: - full-scale chat, mentions, rooms, public and…

The pattern of downloading and executing installation scripts without verifying them has bothered me for a while. I started messing around with a way to verify the checksum of scripts before I execute them. I've found it a really useful tool for installing things like Rust or Deno. It's written entirely as a shell script, and it's easy to read and understand what's happening. I hope it may be useful to someone else!

https://github.com/denvaar/pgdiff I cobbled together various programs into a bash script to compare how data changes between two points in time. My idea was basically to have a `git diff` but for data inside postgres. I wanted a util like this to help get to know a new code base: Interact with an app and watch how the data changes. You run the script with a given key (anything) before interacting with an app, then run it again with the same key to see the data diff. I'm not much of a bash scripter, as you can probably see from the script, but it was a fun and useful tool…

Justfiles are like Makefiles, except Just is a command runner, whereas Make is a build system. As I understand it, Just was built to be a less arcane version of Make for collecting commands common to a code repository. When I first learned about Just, I realized that parsing arguments and running commands is exactly what shell scripts do, and there probably isn't much Just does that sh doesn't. This project proves that hypothesis by compiling Justfiles to portable (POSIX-compatible) shell scripts. just.sh is particularly useful for running Justfiles in esoteric environments where Just may…

In the deep mists of time (circa 2012), I was playing with the Go standard library, and saw how easy it was to stand up a webserver that let you navigate a remote file system, and I thought it was pretty neat. I took a look at my shell history and a frequent pattern of commands was "cd, ls, cd, ls, ...". And I thought "I love my keyboard, but you know, point and click might be nice in this context." And then I thought, "It'd be even cooler if you could run commands there." Skip forward several years, a few earlier implementations, a name change, and now there's Hucksh(ell), a bash-like shell…
