A way to generate .mp3 files from ePUB. I wanted to continue "reading" even after my eyes got tired or if I went away from the screen. For these cases, what I did was select a given text, and select "Speech". If you've used this before, you know it's fine for small sections, but not for big chunks of text. So, I challenged myself to create a project that would "text-to-speech" a given book. After some attempts, I came up with a good-enough initial version using Golang. It will parse an ePUB into sections and run MacOS's `say` command to generate audio files. For now it's quite basic, but…

I've always thought that extensive reading was best suited for the realm of paper. As a result, I've created a command-line interface (CLI) tailored for my own use and decided to make it open source. I welcome any feedback you may have. Hey HN. I’m Ivan, hacker from Ukraine. For about a year, I was working on Listenly — an app to listen to text content with OpenAI's natural-sounding text-to-speech model. At some moment, I realized that it would be cool to take all the public domain e-books and create audio versions for them. So I did it... kind-of. It would cost an immense amount of money to generate all the audio right away (OpenAI TTS costs approximately $0.84/hour of audio; 11labs, for comparison, is 10 times more expensive). So, I took a more gradual approach. I took all the metadata from the Project Gutenberg…

Shown HN: Lue - Terminal eBook Reader with Text-to-Speech Hello, Just went live on GitHub with this project. I really enjoy listening to my eBooks as audiobooks but was frustrated by the available options. Converting books into audiobooks with scripts is tedious, and most tools stumble over footnotes, headers, or formatting. I wanted something simple: just throw a book at it, and it starts reading immediately without any clicking or loading. I also wanted it to be customizable and modular because new, better TTS engines are released all the time. For this initial release, I settled on Edge…

Hi HN! I'm stoked to share a project I've been working on called PDF to Podcast. It's a free, open-source tool that automatically converts PDF documents into engaging, informative podcast-style audio content using large language models and text-to-speech tech. Inspiration: The idea for this project came from the NotebookLM demo at Google I/O, where they showcased generating audio dialogue from uploaded PDFs and other sources. However, that audio feature hasn't been publicly released yet, and I wanted to challenge myself to build something similar using existing tools and APIs. How it…

I noticed that many websites offering free audiobooks tend to have clunky search functionality, making it harder to find what you're looking for. To address this, I’ve created a site that aggregates audiobooks from multiple platforms—complete with book reviews and ratings—making it easier to discover and explore new titles. At the moment, I've included audiobooks from popular sources like Librivox, Project Gutenberg, and Lit2Go. I'm open to suggestions on additional free audiobook sources I could integrate into the site to expand the collection!

I had a bunch of ebooks with no audiobook version available. So I built an iOS app that converts EPUB files into audiobooks using text-to-speech. Two voice options: - Free on-device voices (processed locally, no server needed) - Natural cloud voices (one-time purchase per book, no subscription) Cloud conversion runs chunk by chunk. You can start listening other chapters generate in the background. Once done, the audiobook lives on your device. No account required. No subscription. You import your own EPUBs and either use device TTS for free or pay per book for the cloud voices. Nothing…
