Hi HN, After 9 years of running my own OpenStreetMap tile server infra for MapHub (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11389989), I've open-sourced it and launched OpenFreeMap. You can either self-host or use our public instance. Everything is open-source, including the full production setup — there’s no 'open-core' model here. Over the past week I built a project to let people self-host an entire maps stack so they don't have to send data to the big G. Right now it includes a base map, geocoder and directions server. Currently only bicycle directions are supported, and I'm only hosting tiles for Seattle because I'm unemployed and can't afford to host data for the whole planet. Just a fun hack I did while bored over the weekend. My wife was busy shopping, it got me thinking that can VLMs solve the indoor location problem in a mall? Can I just show a VLM a map and an image and have it doa good enough job locating me? I hacked this P.O.C and it seems to work.

Hi HN, I made SmartMap — a tool where you ask an open-ended question on maps, like: - "Where can I find coworking cafes with power sockets and Wi-Fi in Shibuya, Tokyo?" - "Places that inspired Studio Ghibli movies in Japan" You can also ask it to plot interactive journeys, like: - "Places Alexandra David-Néel visited on her way to Lhasa" - "Train stops along the original Orient Express route" It returns a live, interactive map with the results plotted as pins.
