HN is great for the links people share, but a big part of the value I get comes from reading the discussion around them. I realized I was always opening the article in one tab and the comments in another, constantly switching back and forth. I figured there was probably a simpler way, so I threw together this userscript to merge the two. 1. Clicking a link from Hacker News opens the article with a side panel containing the discussion. It doesn't require your credentials, is resizable, and is easy to tweak if you want to customize it. 2. If you land on an article that has previously been…

Hi Hacker News, I developed an open source browser extension for summarizing Hacker News articles with OpenAI and Anthropic LLMs. It currently supports Chrome [1] and Firefox [2] (desktop). The extension adds the summarize buttons to the HN front page and article pages. It is bring-your-own-key, i.e. there's no back end behind it and the usage is free, you insert your API key and pay only for tokens to your LLM provider. I wanted to share a VPN service I've been working on with my team. In short, it automates the deployment of VPN servers. Instead of sharing an IP address with thousands of other users (like traditional VPN providers do), every user gets their own virtual server with a dedicated IP. In its current form, it works perfectly for those who constantly use a VPN for remote work and gaming or in regions with censorship and VPN blocks. Why we built this: The project started out of frustration. I often used a VPN, and after trying many commercial solutions, I realized they all have drawbacks. This led…

Hi everyone, I read HN every day, but there was always more great content than I had time to read. I know there are already several HN summarizers on GitHub, and I tried some of them. They just didn't fit the workflow I wanted, so I decided to build my own. My project is a self-hosted app that automatically fetches top stories, summarizes them with AI, translates them into your preferred language, and prepares a personalized daily briefing in a nice customizable UI while you sleep. Maybe I'm not the only one who wanted this kind of workflow. I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially on what…
