I've been working on and off on a Chrome Extension for Hacker News, the extension focusses on improved usability rather than design. I can almost guarantee that after a day you won't want to go back to regular Hacker News. Give it a try, features include: - Improved readability - Quick inline replies from comments page - Quick profiles with social network info when hovering over usernames - Filtering of stories based on terms and phrases / domain or user - Endless scrolling - Collapsible comment threads - Social sharing for Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Buffer Forks, improvements and comments…

I got fed up with the news reader apps out there so I decided to make my own. Its a simple concept where it tracks all your favorite news sources for new posts and the social shares it received. Then it ranks it HN/Reddit style using social shares as upvotes. It's not meant to be alternative to HN, just a focused way to track your favorite sources. Please try it out and let me know what do you think, http://telescope.surf/ Note: you can do 'Add to Homescreen' on mobile to make it as an app. Please leave a feedback or any feature wishlist you may have. Thanks!

I wanted to find a product idea to build. "Build things people want," right? So I thought, why not literally find people saying what they want? I wrote a script to collect thousands of Reddit posts where people are looking for a solution or complaining about a problem. Then I used GPT to filter out the noise and score each one based on how viable the idea seemed. Threw together a simple search interface so anyone can explore them. I was planning to build a more advanced paid version of this, but figured I'd share the raw version first to see if it's actually useful to anyone.

Hey everyone, Common advice for inexperienced hackers suggests "scratching an itch." Like many others here, I spent too much time on HN, Google Reader and Twitter searching for interesting stuff, so I decided to write an app that brings interesting links to you with no other distractions. HighFive uses Twitter and bit.ly's APIs to find interesting links in your timeline. When you log in, you'll see a group of five links with voting arrows. No HN comments or RSS feeds with hundreds of links--just a few interesting articles that you can read, then get back to work. HighFive was built using…

Hey guys! About 6 months ago we launched the first version of Scribble on Hacker News & Product Hunt. Scribble (https://hiscribble.com) is a simple, no BS blog-writing subscription for startups, small businesses, and indie makers. Since launching our 1.0 we’ve learned a lot about how to run a service like this, and today we’re launching a huge revamp: We’ve about doubled the amount of writers on the team (all native English-speaking, all based in the USA) We’ve optimized our pricing & ops models to make us the most affordable premium writing service available (without outsourcing…

Pulsefeed has been developed on and off in my spare time over the last 4 months, I'm finally happy with it's basic set of features, and was wondering what the Hacker News community thought? Thanks :)

Former investigative reporter turned developer. I built a simple breaking-news monitor because tracking events across platforms is a mess now that Twitter’s unreliable. Bluesky is the backbone (a fraction of twitter, but still lots of journalists and OSINT folks), plus RSS, Telegram, Reddit, YouTube and Mastodon. Everything is one chronological feed with no algorithm, clear source labels, and lightweight activity detection when a region spikes above baseline (frequency math, not LLMs). But we do have a (hopefully non-obtrusive) AI-generated recent/post summary. Been building for a…

Hi guys, Lately, I’ve noticed myself searching for things in Google and then typing Reddit (e.g. “opinion on Liz Truss reddit.”) I tried to work out why I was doing this, initially thinking that I just wanted to enjoy the social aspect of the internet, but now I think I do it because, sometimes, I want to see results which have been filtered down by people, not by the Google search algorithm. One of the many examples of where I think this can be useful is when searching for products or services. I know that if I Google “best laptop for gaming,” the results will be the products of large…

It took me six months to analyze 562 subreddits. I systematically parsed titles, post bodies, and user interactions to identify statistically significant patterns and evaluate if it was possible to create a model that could predict the likelihood of a post going viral based on specific features. The key findings were unexpected: while the title of a post has a direct correlation with engagement, there is another highly influential factor I initially overlooked, timing. The optimal time to post on Reddit, in terms of engagement, can significantly vary based on geographic distribution. The…

I built trackernews because, originally, I wanted to track opinions on few stocks I was interested in across some subreddits. The core idea is that, by defining keywords, and a description, trackernews identifies actually revelvant posts and extracts user-defined data points from these posts. Along with defining keywords, trackernews also allows the user to define various types of fields which trackernews extracts from the posts. This allows the users to get a glancable/ searchable dashboards along with important insights surfaced. I pre-created some topics which people may find…

Hey HN, Out of frustration of keeping up with AI news, I built hackobar. It fetches the AI related news from multiple sources such as HN, arxiv, github trending repos, huggingface, many ai subreddits, twitter handles that cover AI, Tech news outlets, major ai lab blogs and of course the numerous AI news letters that are growing by day. GitHub trending repos isn't "news" but as an engineer it matters. you can't read every arXiv paper or every HuggingFace drop. HN has the best discussions, Twitter has some, newsletters have some. I used to check 5 places and still felt behind. Building this…
