24 alternatives to Precis – A minimal note-taking app built over GitHub Pages

feed-repeat is a small CLI/service that repeats entries from RSS/Atom feeds into new feeds. It fetches posts from a source feed, selects a random subset preferring older posts, and inserts them in an output feed. I made feed-repeat for myself. I wanted a tool to send me old blogposts written by my favourite authors so that I could enjoy them again, but also not be overwhelmed by a wall of hundreds of unread old posts. feed-repeat does just that. It can be self-hosted easily using the provided NixOS module or systemd service. It can also be made to run entirely serverless on GitHub…

In 2021 after getting thoroughly sick of Privnote, i built "Burner Note". Even though i didn't promote it in anyway other than a post here and a post on reddit, it ended up getting about 7000(ish) unique users per month. I kinda let it die about 18 months ago but i've resurrected it with some big upgrades. Most botable the app is now truly end to end encrypted (previously was just server side), and I've added dark mode as well as a few other bells and whistles. Feedback welcomed.

Alternative search engines are neat, as are RSS feeds. OpenOrb is a self-hosted app which allows visitors to search over a list of blogs you love. If you put your 10 favourite blogs in there, it'll search just those blogs and not show you any sponsored content or machine-generated garbage (unless... you follow blogs written by machines?) Personal RSS feed readers can usually do this sort of thing, but RSS readers aren’t meant to be shared, so you can think of the search engine as a 'curated feed list as a public service'. I wrote a longer blog post about OpenOrb here:…

Well, I certainly tried. I had to, because it has a certain quirk inspired by "digital minimalism." The quirk is that it only allows you to fetch new articles once per day (or X days). Why? Let me explain... I want my internet content to be like a boring newspaper. You get it in the morning, and you read the whole thing while sipping your morning coffee, and then you're done! No more new information for today. No pings, no alerts, peace, quiet, zen, etc. But with that, I needed it to be able to fetch all articles from my hundreds of feeds in one sitting. This is where Zig and curl…

Howdy! RSSfeedASAP scratches my own itch. I run a regional podcasting directory which gets dozens of messy submission for podcasts. Often they don't even include an xml file and me being a good samaritan I sometimes do the manual work and find it myself. I got tired of that manual work and decided to build a microapp. RSSfeedASAP is this app and I decided to release it in case someone else finds any use in it.

Hey HN, I’m a product designer on a payments team. Every time we were close to shipping a feature, we’d run a bug bash in a giant Google doc or spreadsheet: copy the spec in, write the test cases, ask people to mark Pass/Fail, paste screenshots, then manually turn everything into Jira tickets. It worked, but it always felt a bit painful. Instead of another heavy test management tool, I wanted something that feels closer to the tools we actually like using. More Linear/Notion, less old-school QA. With Preflight, you paste your product requirements and Figma link and get an initial…

This project started because I wanted to consume my RSS/Atoms feeds the same way I consume news on HN: a lightweight webpage with a minimalist user interface where I can comfortably browse interesting links. I didn't like existing solutions for feeds reader. Many of them seemed overly complex, most of them require a database and don't event support sqlite. For a simple feed reader, it felt overkill. What I wanted was an easy setup that didn't rely on external databases or configurations. My solution was to build a small CLI tool that print an HTML page from a list of feed URLs. I can…

Owl is built a spaced repetition app. We built it for ourselves mostly because we were unhappy with Anki from a UX perspective, and are now releasing it to everybody else. It is super tiny, but - we think - also pretty good. You can add your own decks manually, or generate them from a PDF (think academic papers, which is how I use that feature) or a prompt. There are no emails except study reminders (when there are cards to study). You can also use our "AI tutor" to review cards conversationally. Looking forward to your feedback!

Right now it's a Nicotine patch for brain rot/doom scrolling. You still get the scroll, but with more meaningful content. WHERE I WANT IT TO GO: Users mark what they are interested in (e.g. AI, or Space or Whatever), and it should crawl the latest scientific articles, high quality YouTube videos, pods, present it in a format that fits you, in a nice feed. NOW: You can search for anything (e.g. "Sea Explorers" --> The app crawls Wikipedia or YouTube and pulls together a short feed (e.g. Columbus, Vasco da Gama etc.,). I'm using RAG so that I always can reference the original data source…
