24 alternatives to I built a fast RSS reader in Zig
Well, I certainly tried. I had to, because it has a certain quirk inspired by "digital minimalism." The quirk is that it only allows you to fetch new articles once per day (or X days). Why? Let me explain... I want my internet content to be like a boring newspaper. You get it in the morning, and you read the whole thing while sipping your morning coffee, and then you're done! No more new information for today. No pings, no alerts, peace, quiet, zen, etc. But with that, I needed it to be able to fetch all articles from my hundreds of feeds in one sitting. This is where Zig and curl…

RSS Brain▲139I wrote an RSS reader called RSS Brain recently. The motivate is the current RSS readers either don't sort articles by priority, which makes it hard to read posts from HackerNews and Reddit, or sort it with some "smart" algorithm which I don't trust. I also like the Google News feature that can show related story from different source, but the sources are not configurable and the algorithm is not transparent either. So with RSS Brain, I implemented these features: * Recommend related articles from the feeds of your choice. It's backed by ElasticSearch and the algorithm is described on RSS…

I built a system that monitors ~200,000 news RSS feeds in near real-time and clusters related articles to show how stories spread across the web. It uses Snowflake’s Arctic model for embeddings and HNSW for fast similarity search. Each “story cluster” shows who published first, how fast it propagated, and how the narrative evolved as more outlets picked it up. Would love feedback on the architecture, scaling approach, and any ways to make the clusters more accurate or useful. Live demo: https://yandori.io/news-flow/

Hi, folks. As an RSS user, I tried Inoreader and Feedly, then ended up self-hosting a Miniflux instance on my homelab. A few months ago, I moved to another city and had to shut down my homelab for a long time, so I couldn't access my local miniflux. It was quite inconvenient. I decided to self-host my RSS aggregator on a tiny VPS or PaaS such as fly.io. However, Miniflux requires a PostgreSQL database, which may isn't suitable for a tiny VPS instance. So I built fusion with Golang and SQLite. It contains basic features such as Group, Bookmark, Search, Automatically feeds sniffing,…

Speed Reader▲99I built a Chrome extension for speed reading using RSVP (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation). One day I came across research on RSVP — a technology that allows you to read 2-3x faster without losing comprehension. That's how Speed Reader was born — a free Chrome extension that lets you read faster right in your browser. The main feature is automatic article parsing. Open any page, click one button, and the extension extracts the text, removing ads and clutter. It also highlights the ORP (Optimal Recognition Point) — the natural focus point in each word. Free, no ads, no data collection.…

Hi all! Excited to share rss2newsletter after completing dev work for the initial release. The idea for this project came out of necessity, as I wanted to share my articles via email newsletter. I was looking for a super minimal, lightweight, and open source solution, and when none existed, I decided to create one. For any sizable number of email recipients, a popular platform like Mailchimp will easily cost you hundreds or even thousands per month in per-contact fees. rss2newsletter, on the other hand, allows you to use Amazon SES, so you can reach your audience at pennies on the dollar.…

Hey HN! I'm excited to share a tool I've been working on - a native Hacker News reader built with Rust and egui. Here's a screenshot: https://github.com/haojiang99/hacker_news_reader/blob/main/s.... As a daily HN reader, I've always struggled with keeping track of interesting posts I want to read later. Browser tabs pile up, bookmarks get forgotten, and I lose track of what I've already read. I needed a way to: 1. Browse HN efficiently (across all sections - hot, new, show, ask, jobs, best) 2. Quickly mark posts as "todo" for later reading 3. Mark posts as…

I created this a year or so ago but recently made updates and I thought people might like to know that it exists. I made this to easily send links or text to someone else verbally, like over the phone or over voice chat (which is what I made it for). The goal is to be able to tell the link to someone else without being ambiguous or needing to spell it out, so I grabbed the words off a Grade 5 level dictionary. I understand that the domain itself doesn’t qualify but I’m trying to get a better domain.

I wrote this small client to read hackernews from my favorite editor. It's currently using an external HTTP API [0] but I'm working on my own proxy [1]. I'd love to actually scrape and cache all the info I need using lisp. However, my time constraints are keeping me away of that goal. I could definitely use some help here! :) I'm also planning to add support for comments and posting new things. Any feedback is highly appreciated! Thank you! Uncited▲12I built a a specialized RSS reader for researchers. It aggregates papers from 3000+ journals (Nature, Science, arXiv, etc.) into a clean, unified feed. It's in beta. I found it difficult to keep up with the flood of new papers across different journals and arXiv categories. Existing RSS readers felt clunky for this specific use case, and I wanted something faster and more focused (more than Twitter/Bluesky) Let me know what you think!

I’ve been using RSS readers for decades, but they’ve started feeling more and more like a chore. Something about the inbox/to-do list design, counts of unread items, managing teams and complex filtering rules... I realized they add to my stress level instead of reducing it. I’ve also come to rely on social media for discovery – hearing about new ideas, tools, papers, people, etc., but I’m so tired of the ads, spam, addictiveness, and toxicity. Apricot is my attempt to distill the best of both worlds. It’s a web app where users subscribe to feeds like an RSS reader then see new items as…

Hey everyone. I built an MTProto proxy for Telegram aimed at bypassing active DPI censorship like the Russian TSPU. I chose Zig because it's perfect for writing fast network daemons and makes it incredibly easy to port low-level C bypass techniques like TCP desync and packet fragmentation. Would love to get some feedback or contributors!

I’ve been reading HackerNews for a long time, and often the upvoted articles are from great blogs I want to subscribe to. That’d be the job of an RSS feed reader. However, in my case, being subscribed to a blog doesn’t mean I want to read everything from that blog. I like to filter content before it gets into my reading list. This is why I developed Lighthouse. It is separated into inbox and library. The inbox is where newly published content appears in, where users can bookmark content they’re interested in, and mark the rest as seen to immediately archive it. The library is the place for…
