24 alternatives to Kindly RSS, a self-hostable RSS app designed for e-ink devices
In the last few weeks I've been working on a RSS application designed to be used in e-ink devices such as Kindle, through the device's web browser. It's a self-hostable app optimized for running on low-end hardware (such as Raspberry Pi, I actually run it on a 3b model). The project is in its early stages of development. It is usable, but you may (and probably will :P) encounter bugs from time to time. I did it for myself (I like to read at night before going to sleep but I don't like to use my phone at that time). I thought people could find it useful so I worked on it a little bit more to…

Hi, folks. As an RSS user, I tried Inoreader and Feedly, then ended up self-hosting a Miniflux instance on my homelab. A few months ago, I moved to another city and had to shut down my homelab for a long time, so I couldn't access my local miniflux. It was quite inconvenient. I decided to self-host my RSS aggregator on a tiny VPS or PaaS such as fly.io. However, Miniflux requires a PostgreSQL database, which may isn't suitable for a tiny VPS instance. So I built fusion with Golang and SQLite. It contains basic features such as Group, Bookmark, Search, Automatically feeds sniffing,…

Hi all! Excited to share rss2newsletter after completing dev work for the initial release. The idea for this project came out of necessity, as I wanted to share my articles via email newsletter. I was looking for a super minimal, lightweight, and open source solution, and when none existed, I decided to create one. For any sizable number of email recipients, a popular platform like Mailchimp will easily cost you hundreds or even thousands per month in per-contact fees. rss2newsletter, on the other hand, allows you to use Amazon SES, so you can reach your audience at pennies on the dollar.…

Howdy! RSSfeedASAP scratches my own itch. I run a regional podcasting directory which gets dozens of messy submission for podcasts. Often they don't even include an xml file and me being a good samaritan I sometimes do the manual work and find it myself. I got tired of that manual work and decided to build a microapp. RSSfeedASAP is this app and I decided to release it in case someone else finds any use in it.

RSS Brain▲139I wrote an RSS reader called RSS Brain recently. The motivate is the current RSS readers either don't sort articles by priority, which makes it hard to read posts from HackerNews and Reddit, or sort it with some "smart" algorithm which I don't trust. I also like the Google News feature that can show related story from different source, but the sources are not configurable and the algorithm is not transparent either. So with RSS Brain, I implemented these features: * Recommend related articles from the feeds of your choice. It's backed by ElasticSearch and the algorithm is described on RSS…

Partially inspired by recent discussions on HN and other places. I've made a single-focus site to introduce your friends/colleagues/neighbours/family to RSS and web feeds. https://www.youneedfeeds.com/ The site is meant to give the elevator pitch for feeds, show a newbie what feeds are and how to use them, set them up with a reader, and give them some nice starter content if they want it. So much tastemaking and newsmaking power is concentrated in the hands of Facebook/Reddit/Twitter, but I'm convinced it's because much of the general populace doesn't…

RSS to Kindle ▲15I'm trying to kick the habit of mindlessly scrolling on my phone. Spending more time reading on my kindle has helped. Its interesting after a year of consistent reading, I can feel my ability to concentrate and focus improve. But often, its easier to scroll reddit or instagra when I only have 5 mins of downtime. So that made me think...what if you could send shorter content like blogs and articles to my kindle. That was the inspiration behind RSStoKindle. Subscribe to RSS feeds on your kindle, and have a mix of content (novels, or blogs) you can read in your downtime. Instead of just…

Well, I certainly tried. I had to, because it has a certain quirk inspired by "digital minimalism." The quirk is that it only allows you to fetch new articles once per day (or X days). Why? Let me explain... I want my internet content to be like a boring newspaper. You get it in the morning, and you read the whole thing while sipping your morning coffee, and then you're done! No more new information for today. No pings, no alerts, peace, quiet, zen, etc. But with that, I needed it to be able to fetch all articles from my hundreds of feeds in one sitting. This is where Zig and curl…

Two weeks until Google reader goes away. I've been building a replacement for myself: https://github.com/harold/rss-box Idea: - Really Free & locally hosted (trivially) - A node app runs locally to fetch feeds and serve up the web interface - No database at all, everything stored in files on the file system - This means that if you host the node app in your dropbox, every machine syncing that dropbox stays up to date automatically (read items, etc...) I've just been hacking here and there in my spare time, but it's become usable, (I've been using it for the last week, and…
