24 alternatives to Readox
Readox is a Chrome extension that reads web pages, PDFs, selections, text files (ie markdown), and text input notes aloud with TTS. You can just play the current page, or save things to a library and queue them up. It highlights as it reads, keeps your place across items, and can OCR scanned PDFs. TTS (for text and PDF) and OCR run on-device, and it works offline after setup. I’m interested on feedback on the library collections as a "playlist-like" functionality, or if most people just want a play button for the current page. Also interested in anything that feels missing or awkward. Thanks!

Hey HN, cofounder of Readwise here. We've been working on this cross-platform reader app for about 2 years, excited to finally share it in public beta. Probably the most notable thing that makes Reader unique is that it supports almost any content type you could want to save/read/highlight: * web pages * emails/newsletters * PDFs * ePubs * twitter threads * youtube videos (with transcripts) * RSS feeds With all of your knowledge content in one place, we built powerful reading and highlighting, as well as a bunch of novel triage/organization features, so you can actually…

Shown HN: Lue - Terminal eBook Reader with Text-to-Speech Hello, Just went live on GitHub with this project. I really enjoy listening to my eBooks as audiobooks but was frustrated by the available options. Converting books into audiobooks with scripts is tedious, and most tools stumble over footnotes, headers, or formatting. I wanted something simple: just throw a book at it, and it starts reading immediately without any clicking or loading. I also wanted it to be customizable and modular because new, better TTS engines are released all the time. For this initial release, I settled on Edge…

Hi HN, Dima here. Super excited to launch ReadAloud! We built a Chrome extension that brings state-of-the-art text-to-speech to your browser. (for free!) The existing options forced a bad choice: the browser's built-in voices are unlistenable, and the products with good voices charge $29/month. This price made sense when quality TTS was expensive to run—it *isn't* anymore. We’re using the latest models that work on-device. All of it works on top of a super intuitive UI that never gets in the way. Here’s a quick demo: tryreadaloud.com ReadAloud is *free forever* at up to 2x speed.…

Speed Reader▲99I built a Chrome extension for speed reading using RSVP (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation). One day I came across research on RSVP — a technology that allows you to read 2-3x faster without losing comprehension. That's how Speed Reader was born — a free Chrome extension that lets you read faster right in your browser. The main feature is automatic article parsing. Open any page, click one button, and the extension extracts the text, removing ads and clutter. It also highlights the ORP (Optimal Recognition Point) — the natural focus point in each word. Free, no ads, no data collection.…
