Hi HN, Dima here. Super excited to launch ReadAloud! We built a Chrome extension that brings state-of-the-art text-to-speech to your browser. (for free!) The existing options forced a bad choice: the browser's built-in voices are unlistenable, and the products with good voices charge $29/month. This price made sense when quality TTS was expensive to run—it *isn't* anymore. We’re using the latest models that work on-device. All of it works on top of a super intuitive UI that never gets in the way. Here’s a quick demo: tryreadaloud.com ReadAloud is *free forever* at up to 2x speed.…

Hey everyone I'm the creator of Voice Out, and I'm super excited to share it with you! Voice Out is a Chrome extension that lets you 'read' by listening. It turns any webpage, Google Doc, or PDF into speech with just a click. Now, you can go through your reading list while working, commuting, or doing chores. I packed it with tons of languages and voices so you can customize your listening experience. And the best part? It's completely free! You can also enable commercial voices from OpenAI, Google, Azure, Amazon etc, using an API key. I set mine to use the OpenAI voice - it works great and…

I generated 70k audiobooks with OpenAI Text-to-Speechfree tier, from $15/mo▲140Hey HN. I’m Ivan, hacker from Ukraine. For about a year, I was working on Listenly — an app to listen to text content with OpenAI's natural-sounding text-to-speech model. At some moment, I realized that it would be cool to take all the public domain e-books and create audio versions for them. So I did it... kind-of. It would cost an immense amount of money to generate all the audio right away (OpenAI TTS costs approximately $0.84/hour of audio; 11labs, for comparison, is 10 times more expensive). So, I took a more gradual approach. I took all the metadata from the Project Gutenberg…

Readox▲7Readox is a Chrome extension that reads web pages, PDFs, selections, text files (ie markdown), and text input notes aloud with TTS. You can just play the current page, or save things to a library and queue them up. It highlights as it reads, keeps your place across items, and can OCR scanned PDFs. TTS (for text and PDF) and OCR run on-device, and it works offline after setup. I’m interested on feedback on the library collections as a "playlist-like" functionality, or if most people just want a play button for the current page. Also interested in anything that feels missing or awkward. Thanks!

http://bit.ly/2qeHLev I’ve wanted to listen to my favorite articles or web novels and switch seamlessly between the audio and text so I can read, and if I want to cook or whatever else, I can continue off the audio. I could not find it anywhere, so I created one: http://bit.ly/2qeHLev. Click on the audio version, scrub the player and scroll the content to test it out. All of it is done programatically, so it works with anyone's voice. Also, it works on the mobile web so feel free to check it out on your phone. What do you guys think about my side project? I'd…

I originally added this to my site to speed up my video editing process. Last year I started a youtube channel and for some of my longer videos it's annoying to rely on youtube or capcut to transcribe when Whisper is open source. Capcut also recently updated their T&Cs to say they own your content if you use their app, so I cancelled my subscription. Another use-case I have is recording my claude prompts as audio, transcribing them, and then pasting them into my terminal. I mostly work on the CLI (claude, ffmpeg, whisper), but I wanted to make a browser version. Not reinventing the wheel…

Google bought a company called Phonetic Arts last year to make their synthesized voices a lot more natural. I think they've just started implementing that technology in Google Translate. I don't think it works for too many languages yet, but English and Spanish voices sound very natural, almost real. Write something in the text box and then press to sound button to check it out. I'm not sure if it matters, but I'm using Chrome. I know Google has just released some TTS API's for Chrome recently.

I built a simple text-to-speech converter at texttospeech.site Free tier: 10 generations/day, standard voices, no account needed. Pro tier: Neural2 voices, 2000 chars, downloadable MP3s. Stack: Next.js, Google Cloud TTS API, Vercel. The $2 domain was an SEO experiment after my speechtotext.xyz satellite drove 22% of traffic to my main product. Curious if exact-match keyword domains still work for TTS searches. Feedback welcome — especially on voice quality and UX.

I built Whispering because I believe transcription is too fundamental a tool to be locked behind paywalls. It's a cross-platform desktop and web transcription app that turns speech into text with a keyboard shortcut, among other things. The app lets you bring your own API key (OpenAI, Groq, etc.) and make direct calls. If you want complete privacy, it also supports local transcription. Either way, your audio never goes through any middleman servers. It's super lightweight (~22MB), built with Svelte 5 and Tauri, and works on Mac, Windows, and Linux. I've been using it daily for the past few…

I made an on-device AI TTS extension using the WebGPU implementation of Kokoro TTS, the highest-rated open source TTS according to TTS arena. It runs model inference fully in your browser, so no server costs and it's secure. It was pretty easy to get the TTS working since the hard part (inference in javascript/webAssembly/webGPU) was done for me. I added some quality of life features on top: click to jump to a different paragraph, alt j & k for down and up, speed control, and voices (though the default voice has the highest quality). I made the extension mainly because I noticed…
