US counties must make their PDFs accessible by 26 April 2027. We drew a random sample of 100 US counties, harvested 941 documents from their public portals, and found 58.1% have no tag tree at all - meaning a screen reader gets no headings, no reading order, and no table structure.

Hey HN! I go a bit about the project on the about [0] page, but wanted to chime in here as well. It’s been a project long in the making - it started in 2019, before everything shut down/changed. The list of closed restaurants I found - for New York only - was already really long. So now (that I have time to work on it at recurse.com) it really felt like I needed to do something about it. I found the official website https://www.nyctourism.com/restaurant-week slow and tedious to navigate, so I hacked together a fast, filterable map to showcase the participating NYC restaurants during Restaurant Week. It's in pure HTML, CSS, and JS, and it uses Leaflet for mapping and a utility JS file for the searchable multi-select input. I recently built an iOS app called Settld: Group Restaurant Finder that helps friends decide where to meet by finding restaurants that are roughly equally far from everyone’s location, and displaying information about them. We’ve all been in chaotic group chats where no one can agree on where to eat — this app cuts through that by calculating a “sweet spot” for the group. For 2 people, it’s the midpoint.
