Products that do what s0rce - A New Approach to News does

s0rce is a new kind of news site - one that focuses on factual information and data, breaks out of the standard article format, and seeks to better integrate users in the creation of content. We recommend starting with one of our more complete issue/event pages: http://s0rce.com/issue-event/republican-primary A more detailed introduction to s0rce can be found here: http://s0rce.com/blog/post/fixing-the-news We're a two person team, so some aspects of the site and content are incomplete - news is a lot of work. Feedback and contributions are welcome (try clicking the [!] links).

Hi folks, I've built an alternative Hacker News front page. It is inspired by and meant to be a replacement for hckrnews.com. I built this because HN is woefully underfeatured, but most sites that try to improve it seem to assume that the visual design is the problem. hcker.news tries to maintain HN's familiarity while adding useful enhancements. There are three primary views: - Timeline View: Browse top stories by votes or comments grouped by day, week, or month (e.g., top 20 per day, top 100 per week). - Aggregate View: See top stories by votes or comments over custom time ranges. - Front…

Hi HN. I was inspired by so many other folks also longing for a return to the old web that I put together a service to scratch my own itch: An extremely fast headline aggregator done in 1990s style HTML. Sharing it with you all for those of you that also would enjoy this now esoteric style.

I made a little website with a server that collects only HN submissions with > 500 upvotes chronologically. https://hn.moritz.pm/ It's quite simple because I wanted to learn from the project. But I think it's useful, to get a summary of what was important over the last days. The UI is almost identical to the HN frontpage, you can click on the comments to view the thread and on the username to see the profile. The rest of the cards takes you to the submitted URL.

I love HN but always felt the search with algolia is okay but does have some limitations. Since I work at Vectara I decided to try and create a better search for HN. It's based on data from roughly the last 6 months of HN stories and comments. Would love to hear feedback and how useful this is relative to the existing search.

    RSS Brain139

I wrote an RSS reader called RSS Brain recently. The motivate is the current RSS readers either don't sort articles by priority, which makes it hard to read posts from HackerNews and Reddit, or sort it with some "smart" algorithm which I don't trust. I also like the Google News feature that can show related story from different source, but the sources are not configurable and the algorithm is not transparent either. So with RSS Brain, I implemented these features: * Recommend related articles from the feeds of your choice. It's backed by ElasticSearch and the algorithm is described on RSS…

I'd love any comments, suggestions or critiques on Newsfeedy (www.newsfeedy.com). It gathers trending topics from Twitter and Google and fetches news stories about them, and displays supplementary info from Twitter and Reddit. I originally created it for myself as a way to quickly catch up on breaking news, and a friend suggested it might be useful for others too. I know it's not groundbreaking, it's just a simple tool that saves 3 seconds of your life. And yes, I know that it's not very shiny. Thanks!

Hey my name is Crisa and this is my first post here on HN. I love this site and it inspired me to build a clone of it for my newsletter. Instead of having a boring landing page, I hope to gather articles, blogs, interesting projects on my own platform. I would appreciate any feedback, good or bad so that I can improve the site. A year and a half after I published https://HackYourNews.com, I've rewritten it to be neater and added support for more news sources. HackYourNews.com v1 had a great response on HN [1] and consistently sees ~2k weekly unique visitors. There were many long-standing requests that I wanted to fulfill (thanks for your patience!): a proper dark mode, correct rendering on mobile devices, and more cogent summaries. This rewrite is the result. gpt-4o-mini reduces the cost of summarization to an absurd degree, so it's now sustainable to keep this free service going! Someday, I hope to use…

I've gotten myself a Supernote A5X (awesome device btw) and since it doesn't have a web browser or anything I've wanted to have a way to read news on it. I've hacked together this utility in a couple of days and it works wonders for me personally so I thought it might be interesting to others. It can also be used as a noise free newspaper generator as it removes images/ads/links and other noisy stuff. https://github.com/lnenad/newser (there is a screenshot of the first page of the generated pdf) It scrapes (news) websites for content and puts it into a pdf. I got tired of reading clickbait articles and seeing irrelevant ads. So I pulled in a few RSS feeds to create a news digest using OpenAI 4o-mini for summarisation. Appreciate any feedback you'all might have. PS: News-summarisation may have been done to death, but I'm a UI noob, so I'm using this project to learn some.
