The Brutalist Report – A rolling snapshot of the day’s headlines
Hi HN. I was inspired by so many other folks also longing for a return to the old web that I put together a service to scratch my own itch: An extremely fast headline aggregator done in 1990s style HTML. Sharing it with you all for those of you that also would enjoy this now esoteric style.
The Brutalist Report – A rolling snapshot of the day’s headlines launched on February 22, 2022 with 232 votes, #105 of 2,645 launches that month and more than 95% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 4 years on.
In plain words
The Brutalist Report is a headline aggregator that displays current news in minimal 1990s-style HTML design. It provides a fast, stripped-down alternative to modern news websites for users seeking a simpler browsing experience. The service offers a rolling snapshot of the day's headlines without contemporary web styling, appealing to those who prefer lightweight interfaces and nostalgia for earlier internet aesthetics.

I've developed a Hacker News reader that draws inspiration from Brutalist Web Design, the open web, Cyberpunk Aesthetics, and glitch art. The entire project is crafted in Vanilla JavaScript, contained within a single index.html file, eschewing any external libraries. It features support for theming, including the use of third-party themes. Additionally, users have the capability to create and apply their own themes directly within the site. Moreover, the application is designed as a Progressive Web App (PWA), enabling it to be downloaded and used as an app on most devices. I'm eager to…
I made a modern web UI for Hacker News2022 · modernhn.com · ▲308Hey HN, I made this free browser extension that modernizes the Hacker News design. I previously launched Modern for Wikipedia [1] here back in December, and it seemed like the obvious next choice to build one for HN too! So I've taken what I learned from building that, and have spent all my spare time this year building Modern for HN. I realize this won't be for everyone, but it was a fun project to work on, and I'm really happy with the result so far. Hope you like it too! Lots more planned for future updates, and suggestions welcome :) [1]…
I ranked news websites by speed2022 · legiblenews.com · ▲320I've been working on building "the fastest news website" for a few reasons: 1. I got tired of waiting for news websites to load, so I made a text-only news website that only has major news headlines. 2. I wanted to demonstrate to the world that if you want to build something really fast on the web, you can do it without loads of JavaScript. 3. I wanted to show that you can design something that looks good without having tons of images, etc. I put together the speed page at https://legiblenews.com/speed to hold my website to be more accountable for speed, but it's also…
hcker.news – an ergonomic, timeline-based Hacker News front page2025 · hcker.news · ▲180Hi folks, I've built an alternative Hacker News front page. It is inspired by and meant to be a replacement for hckrnews.com. I built this because HN is woefully underfeatured, but most sites that try to improve it seem to assume that the visual design is the problem. hcker.news tries to maintain HN's familiarity while adding useful enhancements. There are three primary views: - Timeline View: Browse top stories by votes or comments grouped by day, week, or month (e.g., top 20 per day, top 100 per week). - Aggregate View: See top stories by votes or comments over custom time ranges. - Front…
