Here's a little side project I’ve been working on: https://totalrealreturns.com/ The Total Real Returns chart demonstrates the preservation or growth of real wealth more clearly than conventional (nominal-dollar, price-only) stock charts, because: (1) we include the effects of inflation-diminished purchasing power, and (2) we include the effects of reinvesting dividends from the initial investment. I found it harder to explain the y-axis in words than it was to do the math, so please let me know if you think the "baguettes" explanation on the homepage helps. I was up until 4am…

Read the Tape gives players the same 5 S&P500 stock charts per day to predict. You select low, medium or high confidence and then call the chart UP or DOWN. It's a 1d chart which then resolves over 5 days. Alpha is scored against the Monkey Index, a basket of 11 random coin flips at low confidence which provides a tangible win/lose condition. We're two weeks in and some interesting data is being kicked up. Players like to call tops even though stonks go up- 60% of the 70 charts so far resolve higher, players' down calls have only been right 31% of the time. There's a full stats dive at…

Hi HN users, My project is weeklycharts.org. This project generates and shows a weekly list of strong stocks and ETFs. My definition of a "strong" stock is a stock that is rising, upward trending and advancing stock. This project is based on an idea which I have after reading the book, "How I Made $2,000,000 in the Stock Market" by Nicolas Darvas. I have used UNIX shell scripts and GNU Awk to calculate the statistic; and HTML, CSS and SVG for presentation; and GNU Make for building this project. The stock prices and industry profile of the companies are sourced from finance.yahoo.com. I…

I just grabbed the S&P 500 annualized returns, including dividends but not inflation, from 1871 to 2017. Some fun facts: -The longest run of positive returns is 9 years. -9 year positive return runs happened 3 times, 1894-1902, 1991-1999, and 2009-2017. -That means if 2018 is a positive return year, this would be the first 10 year positive return run ever in the 146 history of the S&P 500. -The average and median length of positive return runs is 3.6 years and 2 years, respectively. -The longest run of negative returns is 4 years, this happened once from 1929-1932. -The average and median…

Three months ago someone posted a site that showed time in corporate [1] The most interesting comment to me was about the National Retail Federation 4-5-4 calendar. That calendar was hard to understand, so I made a visualization of it. I also implemented the other calendar types people were asking for. I did find the SEC dataset of 10032 publicly traded companies [2][3], but have not finished implementing a search for symbol yet. https://www.forestpin.com/cse/ This is still experimental and is a different way of analyzing stocks in the long term. We consider Dividends, Rights Issues, Bonus Issues, and Splits to calculate the value of the share. This gives a more realistic view than simply looking at the share price variations. We reinvest cash from dividends in the same stock and sell existing shares to execute rights. It's a simple calculation but it gives a much better perspective of the stocks in the long term than simply looking at the share price. You can select a stock symbol or click on…

Hi HN, I built Finsuba Premium to solve a problem I kept running into while trading: Most sites highlight “top gaining stocks” over a fixed time window (e.g. 9:30–4:00), but that often hides the actual tradeability. A stock can finish the day up big while offering very different outcomes depending on when you entered and exited. Finsuba Premium sends a daily and weekly email showing the top-performing U.S. stock trades, based on identifiable entry and exit points rather than broad time-based gains. It includes: - exact entry time & price - exact exit time & price - trade duration and…
