I travel and work remotely a lot. Every new place—hotels, cafes, coworking spaces—means dealing with a new WiFi network. Sometimes there's a QR code, which is convenient, but usually, it's a hassle: manually finding the right SSID (especially frustrating when hotels have one SSID per room), then typing long, error-prone passwords. To simplify this, I made a small Android app called Wify. It uses your phone's camera to capture WiFi details (network name and password) from printed text, then generates a QR code right on your screen. You can instantly connect using Google Circle to Search or…

Hey HN, We recently saw that a bad router update made it to the front page, and thought you might like to hear about what we're building at Supernetworks. Our flagship product is a Secure Programmable Router (SPR), which is Linux-based software for running a hardened wifi network that enables easy addition and management of devices. SPR isolates each device into an individual VLAN and securely connects it to the rest of the network. What sets SPR apart is that we've engineered it to use the latest and greatest networking capabilities of Linux, all while employing best-in-class security…

http://www.securly.com To keep kids safe online, we felt it wasn’t enough anymore to rely simply on blocking websites (domain filtering). We also need to protect them on trusted social media sites like Facebook, YouTube and Wikipedia. We couldn’t find any solution that does this for the entire home network. We are two security hackers who have worked in the enterprise firewall space for several years and felt this was an important problem to solve. The video on our front page gives you a pretty good idea of what we do. You can also use us as a free premium DNS server by pointing your DNS to…

http://webscanner.tk/quickscan/ Hi! I made this project over the couse of a week to help teach myself more about Django and web app development. I am studying computer security in school and web security is one of my passions. It is a tool that helps web developers ensure that they have implemented helpful security mechanisms like HTTPOnly flags, X-Frame-Options, etc. There are hundreds of tools that offer to scan websites for things like cross-site scripting, mySQL injection, etc. This tool simply looks for information that is available via one or two GET requests (the headers, protocols,…

Hello HN, for the past couple of months I've been working on Routify and wanted to share the progress made so far and hopefully get your opinion/feedback on it. Routify is a global serverless API gateway which handles routing, authentication, rate limiting, load balancing, monitoring, transformation etc (with more coming soon). Routify makes it easier to manage and secure public APIs. It's distributed across many regions globally and acts as a proxy between your clients and your services. You can configure it through the interface in a matter of minutes (no code required). There are…

Is anyone else on HN participating in this FCC research project to measure broadband performance? [1] I signed up for more information when the project was announced, some time ago, but a few days ago the device arrived. Technically, it is quite an interesting little box. It's a generic consumer device, shaped like a wireless router, with an antenna and five RJ-45 jacks. But it works more like a bridge, plugging in between my existing ADSL modem/wireless-router and any wired devices that used to be plugged directly into the existing ADSL. No changes needed to be made to any of the…
