24 alternatives to Simple gdb debugging of CPython extensions
A simple example showing how to build and debug a CPython extension with gdb - mjbryant/python-extension-gdb-example
This is a debugging tool designed to simplify gdb usage when working with CPython extensions. It's built for developers who write C or C++ extensions for Python and need to troubleshoot their code at the system level.… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. ChatGDB is a tool designed to superpower your debugging experience with GDB, a debugger for compiled languages. Use it to accelerate your debugging workflow by leveraging the power of ChatGPT to assist you while using GDB! It allows you to explain in natural language what you want to do, and then automatically execute the relevant command. Optionally, you can ask ChatGPT to explain the command it just ran or even pass in any question for it to answer. Focus on what's important - figuring out that nasty bug instead of chasing down GDB commands at the tip of your tongue. See it here:…

Hi, I created httpdbg, a tool for Python developers to easily debug HTTP(S) client requests in Python programs. I developed it because I needed a tool that could help me trace the HTTP requests sent by my tests back to the corresponding methods in our API client. The goal of this tool is to simplify the debugging process, so I designed it to be as simple as possible. It requires no external dependencies, no setup, no superuser privileges, and no code modifications. I'm sharing it with you today because I use it regularly, and it seems like others have found it useful too—so it might be…

Recently, I write an interpreter for subset of Python using Go. I haven't seen source code of CPython, all is just written according to my understanding of Python so there may be some unusual things. Hope you can play fun with it. Any suggestion is welcome, glad to get some feedback.

Hi! I've been building a debugger on my nights and weekends because it's fun, and I personally need a better debugger for my work. GDB and LLDB pain me greatly; we can and will do better! As explained in the README, it's still very early-days and it's not ready for use yet, but check back often because it's improving all the time! Check out https://calabro.io/uscope for a more detailed explanation. Thanks for taking a look!

Hi HN! We’re Adrien and Kanav. We met at our previous job, where we spent about a third of our lives combating a constant firehose of bugs. In the hope of reducing this pain for others in the future, we’re working on automating debugging. We’re currently working on a platform that ingests logs and then automatically reproduces, root causes and ultimately fixes production bugs as they happen. You can see some of our work on this here - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39528087 As we were building the root-cause phase of our automated debugger, we realized that we developed…

Hey HN, I just built an experimental VSCode extension called LLM Debugger. It’s a proof-of-concept that lets a large language model take charge of debugging. Instead of only looking at the static code, the LLM also gets to see the live runtime state—actual variable values, function calls, branch decisions, and more. The idea is to give it enough context to help diagnose issues faster and even generate synthetic data from running programs. Here’s what it does: * Active Debugging: It integrates with Node.js debug sessions to gather runtime info (like variable states and stack traces). *…

Hey all, I've been working on this side project to get a Cypress.io-like experience, but for Ruby developers. It's plug-n-play with Capybara system tests, with the following features: - visualize assertions/commands as they happen - view all API requests, errors, and logs in the timeline - pause/continue on any step - rewind through history with a recorded video This is brand new, so looking for people to start trying it out and leave feedback.

Hey HN, I tend to use printf-style debugging as my primary troubleshooting method and only resort to gdb as a last resort. While I like its ease of use printf debugging isn't without its annoyances, namely removing the print statements once you're done. I used to use trace-level logging from proper logging libraries but adding trace calls in every corner quickly gets out of control and results in an overwhelming amount of output. To scratch my own itch I created dlg - a minimal debugging library that disappears completely from production builds. Its API exposes just a single function, Printf…

hey guys, i wanted to show one of my side projects. The idea is a coding harness (independent of models) natively designed for C/C++ developer workflows. I'm a C++ dev and do not find claude code work well with C++ toolchain like gdb and perf. The current version has integrations for gdb, clang-tidy, cppcheck, sanitizers, perf, benchmarking, compile DB navigation, Godbolt, symbolization, binary inspection, and decompilation. It supports Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, and self-hosted models. There are editor workflows for VS Code, CLion, emacs, neovim, and cursor.

Going away from the LLMs hype, we really just want to make developers' lives better! WhoDB is written in Golang, is lightweight, and supports a variety of database backends (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite3, MongoDB, & Redis). WhoDB offers: * Better UX: Intuitive and easy-to-use interface. * Faster Performance: Built with GoLang for exceptional speed and table virtualization in the Frontend. * Schema Visualization: Interactive graphs to visualize your…

Hey HN! I built a local Python prototyping tool that is finally the Python development environment I've always wanted. It has a Jupyter notebook for data crunching, a database of your choice (Python or MongoDB), and a Streamlit app for building a frontend visualization. You can edit the Streamlit backend via an embedded VSCode editor, or locally on your own IDE. The best part for me is that the database connectors within Jupyter and Streamlit are configured out-of-the-box, so you don't need to spend time thinking about how to tie all that together - you can just pick the database you want to…

I want to share a really dumb, but very practical project I have packaged this summer, to perform operations on strings much faster. I was using Python to work with a multi-terabyte newline-delimited file. Reading, splitting, and shuffling it was a nightmare. So, I wrapped a trivial hardware-friendly heuristic I've been using for the last few years into a CPython library. The part I enjoyed the most is implementing SIMD behavior without SIMD instructions... Using 64-bit words to work at 8-bit granularity. Unlike conventional SIMD, the code would remain the same for ~~almost~~ any hardware.…
