Products that do what SlopScore – Contributor Reputation for GitHub PRs does

Open source maintainers are drowning in low effort PRs. Someone sees a help wanted issue, pastes it into an AI, submits without testing, loops through review comments without understanding the code. The PR looks plausible at first glance but falls apart under review. Maintainers waste 30 minutes before realizing it's garbage. This is happening at scale now. And it's worst in projects with bounty programs or GSoC where there's incentive to “contribute.” GitHub tells you if someone is a first-time contributor to your repo. It doesn't tell you anything about their history elsewhere. I built a…

I've always wanted a better way to explore the authorship data embedded in a Git commit log. I'm having fun building a CLI tool to do this. It's a bit like the "Contributors" tab on Github that shows you how many commits each contributor has made but much faster and with many more options. If you get a chance to try it out, please let me know. I'd love to hear feedback and suggestions. Thank you!

00's called, they want their RSS feeds back. I was looking at my growing Github gist collection when a sudden urge to blog and make a name for myself "by not programming" struck. Part way into implementing my oh so special static website generator it occurred to me that, quite frankly, Github gists is a pretty decent publishing platform. I mean, it gives you reasonably extended markdown with previews, heck I could even write in org-mode, has comments, follower - followee relationship, extended search with filters, check out locally and push your edits. Did someone say "edit button"? Thus the…

About 6 years ago I wrote a blog post [0] with some ideas on how to help popular open source maintainers deal with all the noise on Github. Patted myself in the back and never did anything about it :) There's recently been a lot more discussion around this due to AI, so I've built a simple tool called "Slop Meter" [1]. It gives maintainers a quick snapshot of the user's history in open source: 1) Do they just open issues and expect you to do everything, or will they put in the work to fix the problems and open a PR? What's the issues : PR ratio? 2) If they do contribute, what percentage of…

Since everyone seems to be making a github application, I thought I'd share mine. It's an aggregated view of all of a given person's github projects, as well as easyish lookups for linkedin/stackoverflow/hackernews. It attempts to determine both productivity (how much code did this person write?) as well as impact (did anyone care?) I'd love any feedback, but go easy on the number of simultaneous searches as I'm trying to play nice by github's api limits. check it -- http://www.gitalytics.com

Code review conversations on GitHub can be frustratingly slow, now you can have them on Slack. Features: - Each pull request (PR) on GitHub creates a Slack channel (public or private) with all involved parties (creator, assignees, and reviewers). - An auto-generated summary in English of what the PR does, making it easier for reviewers to enter the context. - Notifications of workflow results, new commits, new approvals... are sent in the channel. - Code comments with context are available. The initial review still takes place on GitHub, but messages are then transferred to Slack for…

Hi HN, Lately Github PRs have been drowning in a flood of AI slop. I’ve been seeing it myself, and I’m not the only one: https://x.com/mitchellh/status/2011819428061855915 I think it’s great that folks are using AI tools to code faster and better, but too many folks are abusing them to make low-quality contributions to public repos. This takes a lot of reviewers’ mindshare. IMO there needs to be a mechanism to flag low-effort PRs with AI slop, so you can just skip reading them. So I built one: https://haystackeditor.com/slop-detector It’s a simple AI…

I do maintain big OSS projects and and try to contribute as well. However contribution experience can very bad, if you follow the path of picking the most famous objects. Good luck contributing to Node, Rust, Shadcn and etc - they do not need your contribution, their PR queue is overloaded and they can't handle it. Plus you need to get to their internal circles first, though quite complex process. The world is much bigger. There are so many help required from the smaller but still active projects. Just recently I raised 3 small PRs, and they reviewed the same day! As a my respect to all the…
