Open source maintainers are drowning in low effort PRs. Someone sees a help wanted issue, pastes it into an AI, submits without testing, loops through review comments without understanding the code. The PR looks plausible at first glance but falls apart under review. Maintainers waste 30 minutes before realizing it's garbage. This is happening at scale now. I've always wanted a better way to explore the authorship data embedded in a Git commit log. I'm having fun building a CLI tool to do this. It's a bit like the "Contributors" tab on Github that shows you how many commits each contributor has made but much faster and with many more options. About 6 years ago I wrote a blog post [0] with some ideas on how to help popular open source maintainers deal with all the noise on Github. Since everyone seems to be making a github application, I thought I'd share mine. It's an aggregated view of all of a given person's github projects, as well as easyish lookups for linkedin/stackoverflow/hackernews. It attempts to determine both productivity (how much code did this person write?) as well as impact (did anyone care?) I’ve been seeing it myself, and I’m not the only one: https://x.com/mitchellh/status/2011819428061855915 I think it’s great that folks are using AI tools to code faster and better, but too many folks are abusing them to make low-quality contributions to public repos. I do maintain big OSS projects and and try to contribute as well. However contribution experience can very bad, if you follow the path of picking the most famous objects. Good luck contributing to Node, Rust, Shadcn and etc - they do not need your contribution, their PR queue is overloaded and they can't handle it. Plus you need to get to their internal circles first, though quite complex process. The world is much bigger. There are so many help required from the smaller but still active projects.
