Hey there HN! We’re Joe and Stopa, and today we’re open sourcing InstantDB, a client-side database that makes it easy to build real-time and collaborative apps like Notion and Figma. Building modern apps these days involves a lot of schleps. For a basic CRUD app you need to spin up servers, wire up endpoints, integrate auth, add permissions, and then marshal data from the backend to the frontend and back again. If you want to deliver a buttery smooth user experience, you’ll need to add optimistic updates and rollbacks. We do these steps over and over for every feature we build, which can…

Recently I open-sourced SQLFrame, a DataFrame library that implements the PySpark DataFrame API but removes Spark as a dependency. It does this by generating the corresponding SQL for the DataFrame operations using SQLGlot. Since the output is SQL this also means that the PySpark DataFrame API can now be used directly against other databases without the Spark middleman. I built this because of two common problems I have faced in my career: 1. I prefer to write complex pipelines in PySpark but they can be hard to read for SQL-proficient co-workers. Therefore I find myself in a tradeoff…

I created a web page to compare different analytical databases (both self-managed and services, open-source and proprietary) on a realistic dataset. It contains 20+ databases, each with installation and data loading scripts. And they can be compared to each other on a set of 43 queries, by data load time or by storage size. There are switches to select different types of databases for comparison - for example, only MySQL compatible or PostgreSQL compatible. If you play with the switches, many interesting details will be uncovered. Full description:…
