This is a Java development tool that enables SQL-like querying on in-memory collections and arrays. It allows developers to use familiar SQL syntax to filter, sort, and manipulate Java data structures without needing a… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. https://www.manning.com/books/data-oriented-programming-in-j... This book is a distillation of everything I’ve learned about what effective development looks like in Java (so far!). It's about how to organize programs around data "as plain data" and the surprisingly benefits that emerge when we do. Programs that are built around the data they manage tend to be simpler, smaller, and significantly easier understand. Java has changed radically over the last several years. It has picked up all kinds of new language features which support data oriented programming (records,…

My co-worker and I were debugging a SQL issue; having not seen SQL in two years, I embarrassed myself by confusing union vs. join. After this episode, I tried refreshing my SQL memory, but there are few websites that animate SQL for you. Most of them just have a series of images to help you visualize. There are a few tools that are quite good and robust (especially for large/complex use cases) but require installation and are too complex for my simple purpose. So, just created a small tool to help visualise SQL. Most of the animations are just my understanding of how SQL works. Would…

I love Jekyll, especially the Datafiles[0] feature, which lets you use CSV/JSON/YAML files and iterate through them. Mixed with the Jekyll Data Pages generator[1], which lets you create a page for every row in your dataset, it is a very powerful combination. However, Liquid is a terrible language for data-mangling, and simple filtering/sorting/merging can become very annoying. So I wrote a Jekyll SQLite plugin that lets you use the same data interface in Jekyll/Liquid, but backed by a SQLite file(s). It gives you the simplicity of the Baked Data pattern[2], and the…

Hi everyone, If you have a Java Spring Boot application with a PostgreSQL database, you can implement Event Sourcing without introducing new specialized databases or frameworks. If you have an application dealing with an entity called Order, you should adopt Event Sourcing to keep track of all changes, and know how the Order got into the current state. Event Sourcing gives you: 1. the true history of the system (audit and traceability), 2. the ability to put the system in any prior state (debugging), 3. the ability to create read projections from events as needed to respond to new demands.…

Part of the workflow for building my website is the generation of a table in tab-separated column format (.tsv). The source data is found in four other .tsv files. I use an SQLite query to perform a 4-way join and write out the new table. For convenience, I wrote a script that encapsulates the query inside a Bash function. The example below illustrates this technique. repertoire() { pushd $CMM_SOURCES/_data sqlite3 <<EOS .headers on .mode tabs .import category.tsv category .import composition.tsv composition .import concert.tsv concert .import program.tsv program .once repertoire.tsv…

Hi HN - I’m Peter, here with Harry (devhawk), and we’re building DBOS Java, an open-source Java library for durable workflows, backed by Postgres. https://github.com/dbos-inc/dbos-transact-java Essentially, DBOS helps you write long-lived, reliable code that can survive failures, restarts, and crashes without losing state or duplicating work. As your workflows run, it checkpoints each step they take in a Postgres database. When a process stops (fails, restarts, or crashes), your program can recover from those checkpoints to restore its exact state and continue from where…

Hi all, I've made a javascript library to simplify searching/sorting/filtering in arrays of objects. Its inspired by both GraphQL and SQL, but implemented using javascript Proxies. Instead of creating a new language, its all just javascript. I've made it as part of an experimental database, which uses javascript as the query engine. The normal javascript map/reduce/sort functions are quite difficult to master for junior developers. JAQT is easier to explain, and can still be used in combination with any existing array functions. Please let me know what you think of the…
