I'm a master's engineering student and a big fan of LaTeX, which I used for my thesis and research articles. I have used Overleaf and that was fine until I wanted to git sync, which unfortunately sits behind a paywall. Since I didn't want to pay subscriptions for things that should simply just work, I built the editor I wanted in my free time, where you open a tab, write LaTeX, get your PDF and the files stay all in one folder on my disk. TeXbrain is a static site with no backend. pdfTeX is compiled to WebAssembly (SwiftLaTeX) and runs in your browser. The editor can read and write your…

I was revising my proposal defense and kept feeling like I was repeating the same term. In a typical LaTeX project split across many .tex files, it’s awkward to get a quick, clean word-frequency view without gluing everything together or counting LaTeX commands/math as “words”. So I built latex-wc, a small Python CLI that: - extracts tokens from LaTeX while ignoring common LaTeX “noise” (commands, comments, math, refs/cites, etc.) - can take a single .tex file or a directory and recursively scan all *.tex files - prints a combined report once (total words, unique words, top-N…

I built a browser extension called Gitcasso which: - Adds markdown syntax highlighting to GitHub textareas - Lists every open PR/issue tab and any drafts - (Optional, unimplemented) autosaves your comment drafts so you don’t lose work I made it because I was impressed by https://overtype.dev/ (a markdown textarea syntax highlighter) which went big on here on HN a few weeks ago, and it seemed like a perfect fit for a GitHub browser extension. Keeping up with changes on upstream GitHub would normally be a pain, but with with Playwright and Claude Code it seemed possible for…

Hi When you are learning a new language, you need to practice different skills: reading, listening, speaking, writing. I find writing to be the hardest activity, not least because I have to look up words in the dictionary all the time, and that is a frustrating context switch. Here is an experimental CodeMirror-based editor, that lets you look up translations inline. Type @ followed by the English word, and get a list of possible translations, and select the translation to apply it. Online demo: https://foreign-dispatch-autocomplete.netlify.app/

Hey HN, I wanted a grammar checker that didn’t send my writing to someone's servers, so we built Grammit, a Chrome extension that runs grammar checks locally using an LLM. Your text never leaves your computer during checking. Here’s a 2-minute overview: https://www.loom.com/share/baf501ee6cf14a919a7384128246ed67 Because it uses an LLM, it catches more than spelling and grammar. For example, it can correct some wrong statements like “The first US president was Benjamin Franklin.” Grammit also includes an in-page writing assistant that can rephrase or draft new text. It…
