Hey HN, I'm Fedor (solo founder). After ~20 years of watching devs fight Git, I'm building Branching. Branching streams your local edits to teammates in real time - no manual push/pull. It's Git-compatible and works offline. Why you might care - Teams see each other's changes instantly instead of in PR-sized batches - Conflicts surface ASAP while context is fresh (LLM-assisted merge is experimental, off by default) - Same GitHub remote, so no migration Ships today - VSCode extension + desktop app (macOS / Windows / Linux) - 3 small product teams have been using it for 1–6…

Hi HN, My friends and I worked at Meta & Google. Once we’d left we realised a lot of the internal tooling didn’t have parity on the outside. Specifically, version control tools outside big tech are much harder to use than Google’s Critique and Facebook’s Phabricator, etc. Git is powerful but notoriously difficult to use [0]. Existing Git clients don’t make life much easier, exposing all the complexity by default. In practice we don’t need an equally complex GUI, and version control can be much easier to use. In our experience, it works best to expose a small number of features for an…

Hey HN, creator of DVC here! DVC (https://dvc.org/) is known as Git for data projects. Technically, DVC codifies your data and machine learning pipelines as text metafiles (with pointers to actual data in S3/GCP/Azure/SSH) while you use Git for the actual versioning. DevOps folks call this approach GitOps or more specifically in this case - DataOps or MLOps. We’ve been working towards 1.0 since we started 3 years ago. What began as my pet project now has 100+ code contributors, 100+ documentation contributors, and thousands of users. Our community has taught us…

A tiny (yocto) git client for MicroPython microcontrollers / other memory-constrained environments (<100k) like the $6 ESP32. It speaks to git HTTP/HTTPS servers using the ubiquitous git "smart client" protocol. It supports branches/tags, shallow clones and sparse checkouts (ie: only checking out a sub-directory of a larger project). I wrote it to remotely deploy/update code over low-bandwidth connections.
