GUI disk analyzers are great for figuring out what's filling up your laptop/desktop drive. On containers or remote servers, the options are limited to purely text based utilities (e.g. du) or list-centric TUIs (e.g. ncdu) which are usually limited to viewing one directory at a time. I created leaves to fill that gap. Inspired by classic utilities like WinDirStat and KDirStat, it uses a 2-dimensional treemap^1 visualization to show the entire directory hierarchy with proportionally sized rectangles. It's performant enough to handle millions of files, thanks to Rust and multi-threading.…

Hi HN! I made this after collecting hundreds of "name → tree" submissions at ITP. Live: https://landscape.bairui.dev/ Source: https://github.com/pearmini/infinite-landscape Plant a tree: https://tree.bairui.dev/ Pan and zoom an infinite procedural landscape. Each name is converted to ASCII codes, which grow into a unique tree (breadth-first branching; repeated digits become mathematical roses). Mountains use midpoint displacement + Perlin noise, with SVG radial gradients in the blue/green/gold palette from Wang Ximeng's "A Thousand…

I like treemaps for visualizing hierarchical mass and density of resource usage. I've always particularly loved GrandPerspective's dense, colorful rendering, but haven't found a similar but generalized treemap that works in reactive web views across many data visualization contexts. So I built gp-treemap, a canvas-based web component that renders GP-style treemaps with millions of nodes: https://github.com/imbue-ai/gp-treemap/ If you want to give it a spin, try something like this command to visualize hierarchical disk usage: npx -p @imbue-ai/gp-treemap gpdu…

I built this as a side project because I found existing family tree tools either too bloated or too manual—I spent more time dragging boxes and aligning lines than actually mapping my family history. My goal was to make it instant: you just add the names, and the auto-layout engine handles the hierarchy and spacing automatically. It runs entirely in the browser and exports high-res PNG/JPGs. Would love feedback on the layout logic (especially for complex families) and the overall UI flow. Happy to answer any questions!
