24 alternatives to TromPhone, a Trombone for Your Phone
A few months ago I had a silly idea of making a mobile app that used the accelerometer to track the slide motion for playing a virtual trombone. Just wanted to share the story of bringing it to fruition here on hn. I started out spending a couple days trying to get something cross-platform going in Flutter, but it soon became clear that wasn't the best fit, seeing as I'd need native hooks for most of what the app needed to do, and it wasn't yet clear it'd be possible at all. So I switched to making it an iOS app in Swift. The accelerometer data turned out to be not nearly accurate enough to…

Hey there! I made a little app that lets you to calibrate your turntable by putting on any record and tapping a button. It's called Grooved and it uses your phone's microphone to see how fast your platter is going, almost like magic. You can see what it looks like in action here: https://twitter.com/OKatBest/status/1795453042994680148 The app itself is free without ads, subscriptions, or trackers. It's a tool I built for myself, and I just thought someone else might want to use it too. I have never seen this technology being used before, all other apps require you to…

Hello HN, I just released this music theory and ear training mobile app for guitar which I've been working on for a bit more than a year on the side. The idea was to make something for the eternally "intermediate" guitarist (myself included). There are a lot of beginner apps which rely on learning songs, toolkits which give you a bunch of stuff with no explanation but not many in-between apps to actually learn and practice more generic and somewhat advanced stuff. The app contains short lessons, recaps and most importantly challenges (visual, audio and pure theory) along with a very complete…

I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.

I made this iPhone app called "Affine Tuning" which is a collection of body-interactive musical pieces: https://affinetuning.com/ It uses body tracking (Motion Capture from RealityKit) to shape dynamic compositions. The app is completely free and will be updated in the future with more songs and other interactive features.

Hello HN, this has been my personal project for quite some time now. It has been a slowly evolving project over the years and its core function is for users to expose themselves to progressively more difficult lessons of music notes. NOTE: It is free and there are no ads. There is an in app purchase but most of the app doesn't require it.
