24 alternatives to Virtual Sun
We built CircadianLab, a free in-browser tool for lighting design. It uses webGPU shaders to calculate melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance (mel-EDI, formerly EML, relevant for circadian rhythm and WELL v2 compliance), photopic illuminance, UGR glare per CIE 117, and actual daylight through windows and skylights. It has a database of 400,000+ IES files from 81 lighting manufacturers and supports easy sharing of scenes/configs with other people. Daylight uses the NREL Solar Position Algorithm and a Perez clear / intermediate / overcast sky model, mixed into the same…

For HTML Day 2025 [1], I made a web service that displays the current sky at your approximate location as a CSS gradient. Colours are simulated on-demand using atmospheric absorption and scattering coefficients. Updates every minute, without the use of client-side JavaScript. Source code and additional information is available on GitHub: https://github.com/dnlzro/horizon [1] https://html.energy/html-day/2025/index.html

Hi HN — author here. iesna.eu is a browser-based ecosystem for working with photometric data: parsing standard luminaire files (LDT/EULUMDAT, IES LM-63, Oxytech, ATLA-S001), running design calculations against EN 13201 / ANSI/IES RP-8 / CJJ 45 / IES-IDA MLO, and (the part I most want to show off here) rendering real urban scenes in Bevy with the photometric data driving actual streetlight behavior, including sky-glow contribution. The Skyglow Analysis demo loads a real LDT file into a Bevy scene (Khronos Bistro test asset). The luminaire's intensity distribution…

This is a little hobby project that I hope you enjoy. You can see where the International Space Station is now, with live HD video from NASA, on a realistic 3D globe. The positions of the sun and moon are also accurate, though distances aren't to scale. The clouds are also near-realtime; I span that out into a separate project at https://clouds.matteason.co.uk, where the cloud images I create from EUMETSAT data are freely available. I've got more features almost ready to go, like the ability to turn off all UI, toggleable clouds and turning off the day/night cycle I'd love for…

This is a service I've built to provide equirectangular cloud maps of the whole Earth, updated every 3 hours, for free. It's based on infrared and visible light data from EUMETSAT, processed to enhance the clouds and try to reduce the impact of surface temperatures on the final image. I built it because it's surprisingly hard to find these kinds of images in a format that's useful to developers and hobbyists. I was building a 3D ISS tracker and wanted to include live clouds but couldn't find anything good, so I got sidetracked, and here we are.

I kept trying to explain how important outdoor light is and how most people aren’t getting enough. Eventually I figured that showing is more effective than telling. So we built a free app that uses your Apple Watch or iPhone to automatically track your light exposure throughout the day. It tells you if you’re getting enough, shows you how consistent you are, and rewards habits that support hormone balance. It's in beta on TestFlight, let me know what you think!

Solace▲171macOS gives you three appearance options: Light, Dark, or Auto. Auto follows sunset, which is a surprisingly blunt heuristic. It doesn't account for season (dark mode at 3:50pm in December, light mode at 9pm in June), and it has zero awareness of actual conditions outside. Overcast and dark at 2pm? Your Mac doesn't care. The deeper problem is that macOS treats appearance, wallpaper, and colour temperature as unrelated settings. You end up stitching together separate tools that don't know about each other, or you just live with the defaults and accept the friction. Solace tries to solve this…

There should have been a video here but your browser does not seem to support it. Over a number of years, I’ve experimented with various projects which use luminous paint and ultra violet LEDs to make raster or vector displays. You can see an indifferent video of the very first one here:
