Products that do what Ze.sh – a z.sh-derived directory jumper that uses an event clock does
z.sh and zoxide (and other frecency-based directory jumpers) couple score decay to wall-clock time. After any extended period of inactivity (e.g. holidays) the first directories visited on return dominate the ranking regardless of prior history, and the tool effectively has to relearn ranking from subsequent navigation. The underlying issue is that wall-clock time during shell inactivity carries no information about directory relevance. ze.sh replaces wall-clock time with an event clock that advances one tick per cd action. I have used this tool privately since 2011 to manage directory jumping. While it is conceptually similar to tools like z or zoxide, the underlying ranking model is different. It uses a power-law convolution with the time series of cd actions to calculate a history-aware "frecency" metric instead of the standard heuristic counters and multipliers. This approach moves away from point-estimates for recency. Most tools look only at the timestamp of the last visit, which can allow a "one-off" burst of activity to clobber long-term habits. The pattern of downloading and executing installation scripts without verifying them has bothered me for a while. I started messing around with a way to verify the checksum of scripts before I execute them. I've found it a really useful tool for installing things like Rust or Deno. It's written entirely as a shell script, and it's easy to read and understand what's happening. I hope it may be useful to someone else!

Bello! Made this to help navigate the tumultuous process of navigating to a new machine on Mac when you have a number of custom utilities setup for editing particular files. I built GRSH because I wanted a modern, memory-safe shell that feels native to FreeBSD but works seamlessly on macOS.
