Yesterday the top upvoted comment for "Why We Desperately Need a New (and Better) Google" http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2057772 was adding personal domain blacklists. I offered to build this if there was enough interest so here's a minimum viable product for Chrome (Firefox soon to follow): https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/jiicbcimbjppjbckmoknagndlhjbeohb. Your feedback is welcome!

Inspired by a good friend who did Unstick.me, as well as the recent MVP for 1k project, I've decided to give consulting a shot by offering my services as a developer and product guy to non-technical folks and early-stage web startups who are looking to brainstorm on both the technology and product side, and possibly looking to have an MVP built based on their idea. I started accepting requests the other day solely with a Wufoo form, and just launched a proper one-page site here: http://youshouldworkwith.me/ Curious to hear feedback on the offer and idea in general. It's the first time I've…

I quit my job a month ago and have been heads down working on my startup. It's my first time working with Ruby or web development at all. I launched on the 7th - http://www.onefatpig.com Now I'm done with the easy part (code) and working on the substantially harder part (getting users). Any advice?

I am happy to announce the updated release of my web app, 7courses. http://7courses.com/ 7courses makes it ridiculously easy to jot down and manage your collection of recipes. As someone who cooks, I often find recipes online or in cookbooks, but have no way to organize them. I have been looking for a digital "recipe box". After plenty of searching I just made my own. 7courses was built around the idea that you should be able to choose how you want to organize your recipes, and doing so should be easy and quick. The UI is responsive and intuitive, with a no frills design. Just jump right in…

Did this during the holidays and just finished with few extra features: http://thingsand.me/ And an example blog: http://thingsand.me/jori I tried to keep the platform as simple as possible and focus on the images instead of making yet another blogging platform. Time will tell for what people are going to use it. I hope to add API soon (iPhone uploader would be awesome to blog daily activities).

Link: http://xoxo.cm The idea here was to build a multiplayer game with the lowest possible barrier to entry to get started. That is, no registration, no game setup, as few steps as possible to actually start playing. There's not much substance here right now and there's still a few bugs that need to be hammered out. I'm also thinking of expanding on the idea with some other simple games down the road. Any feedback or suggestions on the concept in general would be much appreciated.

I was experimenting with different term-extraction API's and I came up with this simple HTML5/CSS3/JS thing that shows you relevant images as you enter text. http://bupad.agen.si Basic scenario - User enters text - Terms are instantly extracted from content via Alchemy API - Google Image search is used to find relevant images on Flickr - Images are shown in the background There are some minor perks like the fact that the image searches are rotating around the color wheel (Google let's you specify a desired color of the image), and content is also stored in LocalStorage. The prototype has a…

I love to use Flipboard on my iPad, but I was bummed that the experience couldn't follow me to the phone or desktop, so I decided to do something about it... I built http://ridesurfboard.com over the winter holiday and just finished it up last night, so I wanted to share it with the HN community first. The app turns any website with an RSS feed into a more human, flippable format. It's all HTML5/CSS3/JS and works best in either desktop Safari or on an iOS device, although you can use Chrome if you enable the experimental GPU Accelerated Compositing flag (a how-to is on the Surfboard blog).…

@jasonrr and I just launched a side project we've been working on over weekends for the past couple months: http://airshipsoftware.com/precorder . Precorder is a video recording app that constantly saves the past few seconds before you ever hit the record button, so you can wait until something interesting happens to start recording without worrying about missing a precious moment or winding up w/ hours of boring footage. The website explains more w/ pictures of dolphins and stuff. This is an experiment of ours in many ways. All advice welcome.

People can request invitations to taketake, but no invitations are being sent out yet. We will begin to send invites later this month. Would love to hear what you guys think. Hey, In early November there there were a couple of threads encouraging other fellow HN'ers to finish, and release a project by the end of November. I decided to try to hit that goal, but in the end my meticulous attention-to-detail prevented me from finishing the app in November and it took until end of December to finish it (sadly, that required me to work through through the Christmas Holidays). So, even though it was only 2.x month, a lot of work (and lots of little-sleep-nights) went into that project. Of course, I could have continued developing forever, because there's still so much…

Somebody said "Launch early, launch often", so I guess it's about time. WhatMyFriendsRead.com -- a social recommendation service for interesting links and content. Main idea: What is interesting for you is what your friends find interesting. I made a functional prototype hacked together in php+mysql with ugly html+css. But it works which is why I guess now would be a "launch early" moment. Or atleast show to a bunch of people for feedback :-) On the site your main source of links is from people you add as your friends or people you subscribe to. People you subscribe to provide you with links…

From inception Thursday night to near-feature-complete on Sunday morning, I consider it one of my better weekend hacking projects. http://leftright.me/ I built it with node and Redis which was particularly fun. Redis truly is the AK-47 of databases. This project has deeply engrained my longtime hate of Internet Explorer. Everything should be kosher in Chrome and FF but I had to make some compromises for IE. I sent the link to a few friends and the userbase grew from there. It's not much but it's definitely something for having it live for a day. I'm really looking forward to any constructive…

I finished building Codr.cc last night. Codr is a code snippets sharing website much like pastie or snipt.org, but with a few innovations. First is that it autodetects the language and highlights it accordingly. The second, killer feature, is that it allows you to create snippets from files on your computer. You can select a file using the file browser, or you can drag and drop it into the site. The app will read its contents and create a snippet from it - ready to share. -- Now, I'm a college student in need of some quick cash. Recently I sold wrttn.in rather quickly thanks to HN, and I…

This is a website I've been working on in this holiday season. It tries to help creators in choosing the right idea to implement, and help you get reviews from your peers or from your friends. To work you need to log in with a google account, describe your idea, and review the ideas of other (chosen randomly). You then will get reviews of your idea from others. It's very basic as this is just a MVP of what it could be and I would really appreciate any suggestions/criticism you could give. You can do it here or directly reviewing the idea of "Idea Roulette" I've created on Idea Roulette…

I have just launched a project that has been sitting on my hard drive 80% finished for the better part of a year. http://www.chatroulettespy.com It detects your 'anonymous' chat partner's IP address and performs a geolocation lookup on it to show the user the partner's approximate location on a map. I know the Chatroulette fad has peaked a long time ago (when I started this project), but there are still many people using it and its many clones. It was important for me to follow through on this one and not let it die on my hard drive like many projects before. I would appreciate any feedback…

Two weeks ago I posted a link to my side project (http://flightlite.com) and got some great feedback from HNers. I've spent a lot of time tweaking and improving based on that and I'm really happy with the result - it's much more usable and useful now! What's better: - reduced complexity of the main tracking page based on feedback from #veb - new search functionality (auto-completion, blended all search types into one search box) - thanks #robyates for your input - failover to large Google Maps view if Google Earth isn't installed with prompt and link to install from - added a proper 404 page…

I just launched a site/business I've been working on for, well, too long: http://FunctionalJobs.com After observing the recent GitHub Jobs launch I decided to try a soft-launch approach rather than launch the site with zero job listings, or backfill listings myself for free. Long time lurker, first time poster here. I have been teaching myself web and app development and I just built my first web app in my spare time. http://theeverchangingwebsite.com The other day I was thinking about web advertising, and how inefficient it is for almost all parties involved. I was particularly focused on the banner ad, and then I started to wonder what would happen if the banner ad and the site content switched roles. This is purely an experiment at this point, but I'd like to know what the HN crowd thought of an unorthodox advertising solution like this. Thanks!

Please have a look at www.socialeaks.com and tell me what you think. This is my first adventure in coding (my background is not CS). I started learning rails about a month ago via railstutorial.org. When I finished that, I felt the best way to continue learning would be to just build an app from scratch. I came up with this concept while observing how crazy the world had gone over WikiLeaks. I thought this was a funny idea. I also thought it would be fun to build! So, here I am. I built this in rails 3 and it is currently living on Heroku. It took me about two weeks to code, doing just about…

Hey Guys, Would love some feedback on a javascript library that I am working on. It's designed to ease the pain with implementing touch support (and maintaining mouse support also) when implementing interactive web apps / demos. http://sidelab.github.com/interact/ I'm basically re-implementing (and improving in the process) the interaction handling I had built in Tile5 (HTML5 Mapping Library). For this reason, it has a slant towards interfaces that make use of panning and zoom, but you can definitely build applications that don't need these features. Thanks, Damon.

Hi HN, I just launched SaveThatCall, which allows users to record and download phone calls in MP3 format. I built it after having a personal need to download a recorded voicemail message and finding no easy and inexpensive way of doing it. http://www.savethatcall.com It is built using Google App Engine and Twilio, with payment processing through PayPal and some audio file work done with a Python script running as a daemon on Dreamhost. Your feedback is appreciated!
